Triano Lifts Kean Past Vassar, 5-2

Poughkeepsie, N.Y. (9/10/08) - Freshman Olivia Triano (Keyport, N.J.) recorded a hat trick to lead the Kean University field hockey team to a 5-2 victory over host Vassar College in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon. The Cougars scored three times in a two-minute span early in the opening half, as Triano opened the scoring 8:25 into the contest, tallying the unassisted goal after collecting the ball following a saved shot.

Senior Katie McGee (Cherry Hill, N.J.) followed just 46 seconds later, scoring off a pass from sophomore Erica Kelly (West Deptford, N.J.) on the penalty corner. Triano added her second goal at 10:14, taking a pass from sophomore Kelly Mataya (West Paterson, N.J.) for the 3-0 lead.

Vassar got on the board in the 14th minute to trim the deficit to 3-1 before the Cougars added two more first-half goals by junior Brittany Gibbs (West Deptford, N.J.) and Triano for the 5-1 edge at the break.

Kean held a 24-7 advantage in shots and a 13-9 edge in penalty corners. In goal, Kean sophomore Ashlie Berghold (Boyertown, Pa.) made three saves in the opening half.
