Volleyball Defeats Rutgers-Newark in Five Sets

UNION, N.J. (9/21/10) - Junior outside hitter Jamie Sacco had a game-high 13 kills and added three blocks to help lead the Kean University women's volleyball team to a five-set victory (24-26, 25-17, 18-25, 25-15, 15-10) over Rutgers-Newark in New Jersey Athletic Conference action on Tuesday evening. The Cougars (9-7, 1-1 NJAC) rallied from a set-down after the first and third sets before again rallying from a 10-9 deficit in the fifth set by scoring the final six points to clinch the win.

For the Scarlet Raiders (4-8, 0-2 NJAC), junior outside hitter Toni Moppert had a team-high 11 kills and 15 digs.

In the victory, junior Nicole Bolash added 10 kills, 15 digs and four service aces, while senior setter Colleen Masterson had a game-high 37 assists and junior libero Mary Aldana posted a game-high 20 digs.

Junior Tara Richey led the Cougars' blocking attack, finishing with six assisted blocks, as Kean posted eight total blocks in the match.

Rutgers-Newark sophomore middle blocker Rachel Witt added 10 kills and five service aces, and freshman setter Jen Mendoza had 24 assists.

The Kean win ended a 12-game NJAC losing streak for the Cougars, with Kean's last NJAC victory coming against the Scarlet Raiders in October 2008.

The Cougars return to action on Saturday, September 25, at the Penny Fall Classic at Washington College (Md.).
