Ever hear the saying, "It is never too late to get involved?" Well, such should be the motto for every student that has not been a part of the Kean University experience. An outstanding student is someone who is not only studious, but someone who also excels in extracurricular activities. So if all a student does is attend classes and focus on the academic aspect of college, then he or she is missing out on numerous activities that Kean University has to offer ranging from sports and clubs to events. Why should one participate in these activities? Well for one, it is a productive way to spend some leisure time; and second, it is a great way to build a healthy and impressive resume. Although paying attention to grades is important, having only book-smarts does not mean much when applying for a job since many jobs also look at the co-curricular transcript, or CCT, in conjunction with the traditional resume. The CCT is a record of student involvement in recognized Kean University programs, workshops, organizations, and community services. Therefore, being a well-rounded student and participating in extracurricular activities is important.

So what does Kean University have to offer its students? In beginning with sports, Kean University offers men an opportunity to participate in baseball, basketball, football, soccer, lacrosse, and track and field; and offers women a chance to play basketball, field hockey, lacrosse, soccer, softball, tennis, volleyball, and track and field. If one does not have athletic ability, they should feel encouraged to attend the games and support the teams. For those that would like to stay fit, they should become a part of the Kean University intramural and recreational programs. Both the recreation and intramurals departments offer students, faculty, and staff a way to stay in shape and engage in on-campus sports activities. Some activities include zumba, yoga, and Russian martial arts.

Now if one is not interested in sports, then being a member of a club is another great option. Kean University has a total of four different categories of clubs that many students would be interested in joining. These are governing organizations, funded groups, non-funded groups, and honor societies. These clubs are surrounded by cultural, religious, departmental, special interests, and recreational purposes. They conduct workshops and special events. According to the center for leadership and service, all students are eligible for membership in groups and are encouraged to join clubs and organizations that interest them. Carminda B. Bandeira, President of student organization says," Students that get involved in student organization's funded groups develop a passion to serve the student body of Kean by providing them with events that help to make the college experience a fun and memorable one. I strongly encourage involvement because I have witnessed first hand that getting involved with funded groups can bring forth many opportunities to grow as students and people of the community. It also provides opportunities and situations outside of the classroom that teach and enhance many skills that can be used in any future endeavors. Students are immersed into an environment where leadership, professionalism, planning, organization, self-development, and teamwork are taught, practiced, and expected. Even general body members of the funded groups can get the same experiences by actively participating in event planning, leading towards a feeling of pride when having helped make the end result a success. Being a member of a funded group is a great way to meet new people and ensure a fun experience during the college years." Kean University also offers students a chance to engage themselves through greek life. Greek organizations at Kean University take pride in providing students with a glimpse of intellectual achievement, awareness of social responsibility, social and personal development, and respect for human diversity. There are thirteen fraternities and sixteen sororities that offer a rich and rewarding experience for those who choose to affiliate. Those that are interested in rushing a greek organization should visit room 219 in the University Center to attain more information.

The list of events that take place on the campus is simply endless. It would be an understatement to say that Kean University offers its students great options. From student funded group events, to blood drives, to concert events that feature major label bands such as David Cook and Taking Back Sunday, there is so much to do here and so little time. Flyers hyping events are posted throughout the campus and students are encouraged to keep an eye open for them for an exhilarating
college experience.
