Dim lights, a cozy atmosphere, and classic treats to snack on, made The Cougar's Den the perfect place to host the Sex over Milk & Cookies event -- Tuesday, September 27, 2011. Hosted by Kean University fraternity Phi Beta Sigma Mu Pi Chapter, the event was meant to gather community members to talk about the intimate topic of sex. During their college years, many students are not sure how to approach this topic; often pondering their unanswered questions. For them, this event was the perfect place to get some information.
As promised, various types of milk and cookies were offered as president of Phi Beta Sigma, Dare Thompson welcomed the audience. Dr. Norma Bowe, of the physical education, recreation, and health department, spoke about the scientific aspects of sex. Dr. Bowe, famous for her Safer Sex Workshop pictures, explained how chemicals such as dopamine and serotonin are the reasons why people feel physically attracted to one another. Symptoms such as dilated pupils, a fast beating heart, and blushing are all signs of these chemicals at work.
The presentation provided questions that encouraged an interactive atmosphere. The answers to questions such as "do friends with benefits exist?" and "what do guys and girls really think about each other?" gave audience members a "new light" of their opposite sex. The topic of "double standards" amongst males and females also sparked a lively debate. Phylicia Stewart, a junior communications major, stated, "The event was informative and made me laugh. It gave an insight on male thinking."
Moses Santil, the public relations officer of the fraternity and host of the event, stated that Phi Beta Sigma wanted to get a different perspective on sex. "Many of the events about sex are the same," he stated. "We wanted to give students a chance to speak their minds and express what they really feel."
