Kean University has an exceptional graduate program with extraordinary graduate students. One such graduate student is Trevor Remkissoon who is seeking his M.A. in Counseling with a concentration in School Counseling. Trevor also works in the University Center game room as a graduate assistant. You might have seen him and thought, "He's just another game room employee with a nice smile and sharp glasses". But Trevor is on top of his game with more than just pool sticks to handle. Living in North Newark, Trevor has about a 25 minute commute to Kean almost everyday but he doesn't mind driving the distance because the affordability compensates for the time spent on the road.
Before coming to Kean, Trevor obtained for his undergraduate degree at Montclair State University where he majored in Psychology. Once accepted into the Counseling graduate program at Kean, Trevor knew that he had to get involved. First, he applied for a working position through the Graduate College and was selected to work in the game room. Trevor then joined many university organizations and committees. His favorite committee that he has served on is the parking appeals committee. "People always tried to fight their tickets and just certain things they would say to get out of it, I found hilarious", commented Trevor.
Trevor also interns at Newark Technology High School where he counsels students individually or in groups. "I think I work well with adolescents because I relate to them and I can help students choose their path," said Trevor. There's no surprise that Trevor works so well with people because he went to a handwriting expert once and was told that he thrives in social environments.
Although Trevor's time is almost up at Kean he knows that he has made an impact on the Kean community. "I don't think people can forget who I am because of my personality and how much I interact with people," said Trevor. He shows a lot of appreciation to his former professors that have helped push him along the way. "Kean has prepared me to continue on. The faculty is just phenomenal in the Counseling Education Department. They are always supporting you to do your best," said Trevor. His next stop is Mississippi State University where he plans to attain his PhD. One thing that Trevor believes when it comes to finding your success is, "You're never by yourself out there. You're always on someone's shoulder. Someone will help you get to where you're trying to go," said Trevor.
