Putting All The Cards On The Table
A roundtable discussion about issues in the black community

One of the great revolutionaries, Malcolm X once said, "If you're not part of the solution, then you're part of the problem." The Office of Africana Studies, recognizing this great philosophy, sponsored a roundtable discussion geared towards the critical issues that black men and women face. On February 7, 2006, Kean University students along with some of Kean's most respected and intelligent faculty and staff members came together in peace, to find out what's really going on in their community and offer positive effective solutions.
The first half of the program had men and women meeting in seperate rooms. LaTysha Gaines, Associate Director of Residence Life, Waffiyah Saleem, and Maryann Diaz, both Residence Hall Directors, moderated for the women and Stan Neron, Kean Alumni, and Wayne Suber, Financial Aid Counselor lead the men. Both conversations consisted of issues such as how to have healthy relationships and the poor education of the youth. Ms. Audrey 'Ilesa' Gray brought to light a really good point for both the men and women to think about. She stated "somewhere along the way, I think the youth lost respect for the elders, which is why as a community we have had some of
