As everyone knows there has been talk of a party policy change concerning the parties hosted in Downs Hall. On February 21, 2007, the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs hosted a meeting to discuss the updates concerning this policy. Vice President for Student Affairs, Janice Murray-Laury, the Chief of Campus Police, David Parks, the Director of Student Life and Leadership Development, Valerie Winslow, the Assistant Director of Residence Life, LaTysha Gaines, and the Director of Student Conduct, Joe DiMichele were on hand to answer questions posed by students and staff. The meeting was held to inform student groups and organizations hosting parties could be aware of all of the updates to the policy, but it was also open for all students to come and listen.

Below you will find the policy changes for students:

For the Role of Attending Students
Only Kean University students may purchase tickets for parties.
Kean students must present their valid Kean University student ID for admission.
Guests must have a valid photo ID (such as driver's license) for admission.
Students must arrive with their guests and sign in.
Students, inside the party, cannot hold onto tickets while waiting for friends to come to the event.
No loitering will be permitted in the area surrounding Downs Hall.

Role of Sponsoring Organization
The sponsoring organization will take more ownership of their events. Representatives from the organization may be asked to assist with specific duties that will be established during the planning meeting with the Coordinator of Student Programs. Duties may include:

Distributing giveaways and beverages purchased by the sponsoring group
Walking around inside the party to make sure attendees are following party rules
Making opening and ending announcements to attendees concerning University expectations
Reporting incidents to Campus Police and the Coordinator of Student Programs.
At 11:30 pm, when the doors are closed, the host students can then participate as attendees at the party, but one student is responsible for making the ending announcement, telling students that the party will end shortly. All participants must vacate the building and surrounding area immediately after the ending announcement is made.

The sponsoring organization should make every effort to distribute complimentary tickets prior to the event. When complimentary tickets must be distributed the night of the event, representatives of the sponsoring group must deliver the complimentary tickets to the Office of Student Life and Leadership Development, UC-219, by 5:00 pm the day of the event. The tickets must be labeled with the student's/guest's names and the student's/guest's are required to show valid photo ID for admission. Students and guests will not be permitted to wait in the Downs Hall area for tickets.

The policy change is to ensure the safety of all students, staff, guests, and police. The policy is still under development, so make sure to look out for flyers for update meetings or check The Cougar's Byte for updated information.
