Enjoy These Summer Reads

This may be the only issue of The Cougar's Byte you will read this summer, but there is no reason to worry though. There are plenty of other summer reads for you to enjoy. Without school in session and perhaps a vacation from work, you will finally have the time to read the books for shear enjoyment. Then again, you may want to take a vacation from everything, including reading, but it is important to keep your mind active though. This summer, unwind with a book that you won't mind reading.

Readers who enjoyed The Hobbit or Lord of the Rings can look for to a new release written by J.R.R. Tolkien. Wait, how can there be a new book written by Tolkien when he has been dead since 1973? With the help of his son, Editor Christopher Tolkien, and Illustrator Alan Lee, The Children of Hurin tells the story of the tragic fate of Hurin's children. His son, Turin, is exiled and has an unintentional incestuous relationship with his sister, Nienor. There are also mythical creatures in the story including elves and dragons. If you are a fan of the fantasy genre, this is a must read.

The seventh and final book of the Harry Potter series is titled Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows. This fantasy novel is targeted for a large audience including both child and adult readers. It is rumored J.K. Rowling wanted to kill off her main character, Harry, in the final book of the series. Anyone who would like to find out what happens should anticipate reading this book.

Have you been thinking about taking a vacation this summer but are not sure where you would like to go? 1,000 Places to See in the U.S.A. and Canada Before You Die will be released just in time. The book is organized by region and interests such as museums, sports, and road trips. If you are interested in traveling abroad, there is another title written by the same author which has sold over two million copies. It is called 1,000 Places to See Before You Die.

Newsweek columnist and author, Anna Quindlen, has written her fifth novel which will be released in time for summer. This story literally shows the strength and power of words. Just two words cause the main character to lose her job as a morning talk-show host. If you want to find out which words cost Meghan Fizmaurice her job, pick up a copy of Rise and Shine this summer.

Most people are familiar with the writings of Edgar Allan Poe. Like many of his stories, his death remains a mystery. He died at age forty, and his cause of death has been attributed to alcohol, drugs, cholera, rabies, suicide, and tuberculosis. Since no one is really sure what happened to Poe, author Matthew Pearl explores this topic in The Poe Shadow, which will be available this summer. The body of Edgar Allan Poe is buried in an unmarked grave and his friends and family consider him a drunk, and a second-rate writer, but a lawyer named Quentin Clark disagrees. He is inspired by Poe and decides he must find someone who can figure out what happened to him.

Take advantage of all the free time you will have this summer to read anything you choose. There are plenty of summer reads out there to enjoy. Before you know it, you will be too busy with school and/or work to do a lot of reading, except of course if you happen to pick up a copy of The Cougar's Byte.
