With the first day of summer being Thursday, students that are not taking summer courses may soon be asking themselves, what am I going to do this summer? When a lot of your friends are talking about their wonderful summer plans to travel abroad, you may feel as though the summer will pass you by as instantaneously as the last. Don't sweat it; keep in mind there are fun, exciting, and educational daytrips and activities that won't burn a hole in your pocket. Go "Down the Shore"- New Jersey is home to some of the finest beaches in the country. With its close proximity to many intermediate points in New Jersey, the beaches offer exciting day trips that will help you beat that summer heat without costing you a lot of money.
Visit a historic site- New Jersey is home to dozens of exciting historical sites from various eras of American life. Sites like Washington's Headquarters in Morristown, and even Liberty Hall Museum located right across the street, offer a glimpse into the role of New Jersey during the course of the American Revolution. New Jersey is home to many other historical sites that unlock the history of the state, as well as provide great day trips for college students on break.
Get a part-time job- Kean students have the opportunity to work on campus during the summer months in various departments. Part-time employment at Kean has competitive pay rates, flexible schedules, as well as the opportunity to build a resume for after graduation.
Get an internship- The Career Development and Advancement center in the Center for Academic Success can assist you in finding an internship that will help you learn more about your intended field of study while you bulk up your resume. Get Organized- Summer is a great opportunity to get you organized for the upcoming semester. If you intend to save all your notes and work from the previous semester, invest in a file cabinet in which to store all those old class notes. Another thing ongoing students can do in their off time is obtain a course guide sheet for their major and plan out their future semesters accordingly. Planning your semesters ahead of time can help you get your course load organized and prevent you from taking unnecessary courses in future semesters.

By taking the initiative, your summer can be both productive and memorable. So when all of your friends start to talk about all their big summer plans, keep in mind a great summer can be achieved right here in New Jersey. When a student plans ahead and takes responsibility for his or her time, the possibilities for success become limitless.
