The Kean Counseling Center (KCC), located in room 126 of Downs Hall, provides various programs and services to better assist the student population with issues of personal development, emotional problems, adjusting to college life, racial relations, and other dilemmas commonly experienced by college students. The KCC is there to help students in need of professional assistance or students with any difficulties; including roommate and academic difficulties, self esteem and homesickness, as well as anxiety and identity concerns to name a few. Although college life can be stressful to say the least, it is nice to know there is always a helping hand from a great Kean service.

"The KCC provides critical mental health services for the 13,000 students, many of whom do not have adequate insurance to allow for any outside options," says Felice Nathans, Managing Assistant Director of the Department. Although many incoming freshmen look forward to their college experience with optimistic anticipation, many can experience anxiety and stress upon encountering their new collegian life. "The research on mental health trends on college campuses across the country show consistent increases in the level of psychological pathology with which young adults arrive at college," continued Ms. Nathans. "Additionally, the traditional college years of 18-22 are a period of transition physically, socially and psychologically during which many stressors combine to trigger psychological crises."

College can be stressful for those students who may be overwhelmed with the workload, or students who are not accustomed to life away from their parents. Coinciding with this increase of stress are the negative effects of a student being cast into an environment where they are away from friends they may have relied on for moral support and advice. However, sometimes while we lean on our friends for support, it may be best to seek counsel from a person unrelated to the situation to give us the best outlook. Our friends can be there for us, but may lack the skills and training to deal with our problems, especially deeper ones such as, depression and anxiety.
Though one may experience stress from their college courses or anxiety about being on their own for the first time, the KCC relies on decades of experience in the field of psychology to assist the student body on a one-on-one basis. "Our services are provided by licensed mental health professionals with many years of experience," says Felice Nathans.

This service is provided free of charge to all current Kean students. For more information regarding the service, please call (908) 737-4850 or stop by room 126 in Downs Hall. Appointments can be made either in person or by telephone.
