Student Organization operates as the full-time undergraduate governing body of Kean University. Student Organization was founded to promote Leadership, Diversity, and Service throughout the Kean University community. In fact, some of Kean's greatest student leaders have had some experience with Student Organization and they come from a variety of ethic backgrounds.
In previous years, Student Organization functioned as an autonomous entity. But this year, they have decided to go in a new direction. Instead of working as an organization, it now functions as a University department. Nevertheless, there are some things that remain the same, because like all recognized campus organizations, Student Organization is complete with an Executive Board, a variety of Funded Groups and a one of the largest budgets in the nation. Thanks to the great budget, Student Organization has been able to sponsor great educational and social events such as the annual Unity Week and Homecoming festivities, The Katt Williams Comedy Show, University Activities Board (UAB) Fashion Show and Step Show, Senior Week, leadership retreats, and series of campus parties.
David Thompson, senior Psychology major, is a well-known student on campus. Don't let his down-to-earth demeanor fool you. He's not the average student. Last year held lead the junior class as President. This year, he has moved up like George and Weezy, and is now the President of the senior class. Dave said, "The best thing about Student Organization is that it provides students with the opportunity to grow and become effective leaders. As a member, a lot of what you learn, you can use once you graduate and enter the real world. I am not the same person I was when I first came to Kean. My involvement in Student Organization has helped me develop my leadership abilities, as well as help me grow personally and professionally. Because of my experiences, I have been able to give back and leading by example to serve as a positive role model for other students."
Kush Parikh, senior Management Science major, is the President of Student Organization and has been holding things down for two years. Kush said, "Student Organization DEFINTELY has a lot to offer. We sponsored scholarships, provide leadership opportunities, and help develop organizational skills. We offer student the opportunity to gain hands on professional experience. We are also a good networking resource. As President of Student Organization, I have the opportunity to work with a variety of people and I am constantly learning new things."
The best way to learn more about Student Organization is to attend council meetings, which are held every other Friday in the University Center room 228 at 3pm. Council meetings are how you can keep up with what's going on at Kean, present ideas, and address concerns.
