When D'Mite, an aspiring rapper, released the controversial spoof "Read A Book" on B.E.T. (Black Entertainment Television) a few months ago, there were many whom shifted in their seats. For many, the song's raw lyrics and unflattering imagery was too much to handle, which caused an uproar throughout the Hip Hop community nationwide. D'Mite's unconventional attempt to encourage the youth to read might have been a little over the top. Nevertheless, as much as we might hate to admit it, he hit the nail on the head! In 2007, reading is something we just don't do anymore, and it has been that way for quite a while.

The days of sitting in the grass under a tree with a book by your favorite author are gone. In fact, we don't have favorite authors anymore. Instead, we'd rather shoot pool in the Game Room, lounge in front of the University Center, or rush home, so we can watch Flavor of Love or America's Next Top Model. As much fun as these shows and social activities might be, have you ever considered there are more constructive things to do with your time?

Books can take you to a whole another place in history and time. The same suspense and drama you get watching a reality television show, can be found while reading a book. For example, Terri Woods is the author of "Deadly Reigns". Woods tells the story of a powerful black crime family and the struggle the FBI goes through to bring them down. If it's suspense you seek, suspense you'll get with this read! You'll be at the edge of your seat, as you flip the pages telling the tale of drugs, murder, and mayhem.

For all you history buffs or for those of you in need of a little history, you might want to check out "The Autobiography of Malcolm X" by Alex Haley. Most people have seen Spike Lee's film, but Alex Haley takes you somewhere Spike couldn't. He takes you on an in depth portrayal of the life of Malcolm X and beyond.

Ericka Ricks, senior Art Education major, said, "Reading can be fun as long as the reader is engaged. That's what I do, I get into the book. Once I engage myself, I find that I can go to all kinds of places. I enjoy reading romance, horror, and educational novels. Two of my favorite books are 'The Coldest Winter Ever' by Sister Souljah and 'Addicted' by Zane. Both books were so good they left me wanting more."
