After a brief introduction, Dr. Transworker gave us a little lesson on hypnosis. Did you know one hour of hypnosis equals six hours of sleep? Well if that's the case, they should use hypnosis on every college student because none of us really get six hours of sleep everyday. She also informed us hypnosis is "apart of your own self conscious." Some would call hypnosis sleep but the Doctor said, "It is a form of daydreaming, because you are fully conscious, you just tune out most of the surrounding stimuli." Some would compare it getting "lost" in a book, or movie.
Following the concise overview Dr. Laura took us through some quick exercises to see who can stay focused. She asked us to stretch both of our arms in front of us, facing one hand upwards, and one sideways. She then to told us to imagine on the flat hand laid a "thick, huge book." She wanted us to "imagine the smell, is it old or new, what color is it, and how does it feel." All while a balloon was tied to the other hand by a ribbon. She then told us to open our eyes and release and everyone in the audience let out a sigh of relief and she wanted to know why. Everyone's response was "because the book was heavy" however she never said the book was heavy; it was our imagination making that conclusion.
Random students volunteered to go "under" hypnosis and they all came running to the stage when she was ready. They sat in chairs and on the front of the stage. Dr. Transworker put her DJ skills back to work and played a soft mellow tune while she softly spoke to the volunteers. She took center stage and held a small disco ball tied to a string in the air. She told them to count to ten silently and when they hit the number six, close their eyes. She told them to "allow waves of calm to flow through your body as if you were somewhere on a beach." And before we knew it the volunteers were "asleep."
One volunteer passed out on the stage and when Dr. Laura told her she was Brittney Spears and was ready for a comeback, she told us she wants to "make music new." The crowd was in stitches because she really believed she was Brittney. She then made the volunteers believe they were washing machines, birds, and they had no belly buttons. It was funny to see them react to different commands. They also tapped and danced provocatively. She gave three of the students "see through glasses" to allow them to see through the audience members clothing. Their reactions were "no undies", "cute butt" and others that cant be repeated.
Overall it was a good show and a great way to celebrate Psyched About Wednesdays. Thank you to Sandra Espinal from the Office of Student Life and Leadership Development for continuing to give us something to look forward to throughout our busy weeks here at KU.
