National Volunteer Week at Kean University will take place from April 15 to 21. This week will consist of a variety of different volunteer opportunities including a blood drive, the ReInvent, ReUse, ReCycle Art Show, and Kean Day of Service, all hosted by the Center for Leadership and Service (CLS).

Cory Booker is the guest speaker for the Spring 2018 Undergraduate Commencement Ceremony, Thursday, May 17. The former mayor of Newark and current U.S. senator, will be delivering a speech to the class of 2018. More than 2,500 undergraduate students, 700 graduate students and their families are expected to be in attendance in the Newark Prudential Center, ushering in a new stage of life for the graduates.

Taylor MacLean is a graduate student at Kean University currently earning her doctorate degree in clinical and school psychology, who was the winner of the $25,000 AbbVie Cystic Fibrosis Scholarship. MacLean suffers from cystic fibrosis, a disease that affects her lungs and digestive system, but through her own determination and never-quit attitude, she is able to continue her education at Kean and receive this great honor to help further her life and career goals.

On Saturday, April 14, join the Center for Leadership and Service (CLS) as it embarks on its first ever Plant It Forward event in Montclair, New Jersey. CLS is looking for volunteers to go and educate children about nature and how to maintain the 4-H Club farm.

The Kean University English Department presents its Third Annual Poetry Contest! This contest is open to all Kean students of any major and year. Any style and subject of poetry is welcome to be submitted so long as it is completely original. The winning poems will be published in the Kean Literary Journal, and the winner will receive both a cash award and an honoring at the School of English Studies Award Ceremony on April 27.

Student Organization and P.U.L.S.E. kicked off Unity Week with activities and displays of culture in the Miron Student Center Atrium on Monday, March 5. The Miron Student Center was decorated with flags from a variety of cultures and countries. Students were welcome to enjoy the diversity all around them.

Hosted by the Leadership Institute, Kean's Got Talent is an event produced by the leaders of the Silver Leadership Program to promote charity and the talented students at Kean University. Kean's Got Talent will take place Thursday, April 5 from 7 to 10 p.m. All proceeds will be going toward the Children's Specialized Hospital in Mountainside, New Jersey.

Kean University Greek Senate won two awards from the Northeast Greek Leadership Association (NGLA) Conference in Pittsburgh. The awards won were for the Organizational Development and Membership Recruitment awards. This is the fourth consecutive year that Kean's Greek Senate has received recognition from the NGLA.

The honor societies at Kean are organizations that separate the academically elite at Kean and gives them a space to come together and work as a group to help others through service and leadership. Often associated with a specific subject, honor societies show high achievement in academics and involvement.

From Feb. 10 to 12, seven students from Kean University had the opportunity to attend the Lemkin Summit to End Genocide and Mass Atrocities, in Washington D.C. This trip was organized by The Center for Interdisciplinary Studies and the Human Rights Institute, and it was funded by one of Kean's Quality First Initiative Grants (QFI).

Monday, Feb. 12, the new Child Care and Development Center had a ribbon cutting ceremony to officially open its new location. The Child Care and Development Center has gone through many changes over the past few months with the moving of it to Downs Hall, but it has found its new home.

The goal for students is to have their essay stand out from the rest of the pile on the reviewer's desk.
