The Student Organization Class of 2019 hosted its first ever Sweetheart Brunch in the Miron Student Center's Cougar’s Den Feb. 8. This free event gave students the chance to enjoy a brunch while socializing and participating in Valentine’s Day-themed activities.

The School of General Studies as well as its General Education Mentors (GEMs) welcomed back the freshman class with a Valentine's Day Themed Social in the Cougar's Den Thursday, Feb. 7. Students enjoyed complimentary food and drinks, coloring, games and more. The purpose of this event was to keep freshmen involved on campus throughout their second semester.

Judy Smith — one of the world's best crisis managers, inspiration for the ABC television series Scandal and former Deputy Press Secretary in the White House for the late President George H.W. Bush — delivered a powerful and inspiring lecture to Kean students, faculty and the general public, February 6 at Kean University New Jersey Center for Science, Technology, and Mathematics (STEM) auditorium.

As an institution that encourages student involvement, Kean University houses over 160 clubs and organizations that allow students to express their interests and missions on campus. Through the Involvement Center located in the Miron Student Center (MSC), Room 303 students are aided in the process of becoming a recognized group.

On Feb. 6, the Center for Leadership and Service (CLS) hosted this semester’s Student Involvement and Employment Fair in the Miron Student Center(MSC) Atrium. The event gave students the chance to learn about the variety of organizations that are looking to hire or recruit from the pool of talent that is present on this campus.

The Early Childhood Education Club is an organization that aims to help future teachers further develop important career skills, such as communication and leadership, outside of the classroom. Created only two years ago, it is one of Kean’s newer clubs, but it still has established itself as a resourceful niche for anyone interested in education, working with children and personal development overall.

The Lunar New Year is one of the most important holidays in Asian culture. This holiday celebrates the new year and also represents the importance of honoring one's ancestors. Most importantly, this celebration brings friends and family together to celebrate the joyous event. The Kean University community all came together Feb. 5 to celebrate the year of the pig while also educating students on the traditions of the different Asian cultures.

Delta Rho is the Kean Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi, International Honor Society in Education. The Delta Rho chapter was established Feb. 19, 1938 by Florence Stratemeyer, Ph.D., with help from William Bagley, Ph.D. The honor society strives to prepare future educators in reaching their full potential by connecting them to resources, opportunities and other professionals.

President of Kean University Dawood Farahi, Ph.D., approved an incentive for students to achieve a 4.0 GPA for the Fall 2018 semester. First year students with an undecided major or in the College of Liberal Arts who received a 4.0 GPA were rewarded with $100 worth of Kean Bucks. The College of Liberal Arts (CLA) and the School of General Studies view this as a way to get students started off on the right track for the time that they will spend at Kean.

What differentiates these experiences is what students choose to do with their time in university. Being involved in a variety of clubs and organizations makes a student feel connected to their campus community and helps with different aspects of their career. Home to 14 sororities, 15 fraternities and one co-educational congregation, Kean provides a diverse lineup of Greek organizations to satisfy the personal identities and interests of anyone looking to immerse themselves in the pursuits of brotherhood or sisterhood, leadership, scholarship and service. In order to allow all interested students to familiarize themselves with the members and missions of each individual organization, the Center for Leadership and Service hosted its Meet the Greeks event Jan. 31 in Harwood Arena.
