Mary Bystrycki, a freshman studying exercise science, is also passionate about her goalkeeper position within Kean University's Women's Soccer team. Since she was five years old, she has been immersed in a life of practice and dedication toward this sport. With a mindset to continue on, Bystrycki won't stop playing because she appreciates the game and opportunities she achieves through this sport.

December is AIDS Awareness Month, and Kean University is acknowledging this with multiple events that are promoting education concerning sex, disease and communication. AIDS Awareness Month is a month of opportunity to reflect and raise awareness for the disease that affects millions of people all around the world every year.

The first annual Kean Dance Marathon (KDM) Winter Wonderland Gala was hosted by the Greek Senate, Thursday, Nov. 29. The event transpired in the STEM building’s Donald R. Conklin Conference Center from 7 to 10:30 p.m., which was adorned with decorations from top to bottom. Guests arrived in their formal attire to enjoy a night of socialization and fun, but most importantly to raise awareness for the important cause that benefits the Children’s Specialized Hospital.

As a crucial member of the field hockey team, Jenna Patrone had a very successful season this fall, ending the season with 28 points, 98 shots, seven saves and 12 goals, which included six game-winning goals. Her exceptional performance during the week of Oct. 29 earned her the title of New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Player of the Week. Moreover, Patrone was accepted into the Longstreth/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division III South Atlantic All-Region first team as well as the NHFCA Division III All-American third team.

On Tuesday, Dec. 11, Chi Upsilon Sigma hosted a human trafficking informational event to bring awareness to an issue that is happening worldwide. Chi Upsilon Sigma is a Greek organization that values diversity, leadership and community. This organization had hopes of enlightening its audience while also bringing new solutions for Kean University students to know at the event.

This upcoming Wednesday, Dec. 5, Student Health Services as well as Lambda Sigma Upsilon will be hosting Get Yourself Tested. The intention of this event is to encourage students to get tested for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) to ensure that the students of Kean University are healthy and safe. This event will transpire in Downs Hall, Room 126 from noon to 3:30 p.m.

Come finals week, students often find themselves swamped with projects, papers and exams. Fortunately, Kean will offer a Reading Day before the start of finals week to give students a whole day to prepare and review their material. This semester's reading day will take place Friday, Dec. 14.

For the first time, the Greek Senate will be hosting a Kean Dance Marathon (KDM) Winter Wonderland Gala. This event, taking place Thursday, Nov. 29 from 7 to 10:30 p.m. in the STEM building’s Donald R. Conklin Conference Center, is set to provide additional funds to the annual KDM project while simultaneously allowing students to experience an elegant night of fun.

Every November, as a part of Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, the Center for Leadership and Service (CLS) hosts events called Food for Thought designed to give students an opportunity to learn and serve people in the community with food insecurity. In the face of holiday excitement and cheer, the Center for Leadership and Service (CLS) on behalf of the University, humbled the Kean community by bringing attention to the millions of homeless people through their Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week.
