ACCEPTING THE INEVITABLE

Laura Pointon

In order to be successful a student's main concern when graduating from high school was to go to college to get a bachelors degree. Many college graduates will be the first to tell you that this isn't the case anymore. A Bachelors degree will no longer guarantee success and a ticket into the career of your choice. The job market is getting more and more competitive as we speak. In fact, some professions mandate a Masters degree or the ultimate Doctorate. Students, aware of this reality, are taking the necessary steps to pursue Graduate School to combat the competitive job market.Nathan Weiss Graduate College hosted their Winter Open House on Saturday, January 29, 2005 in the New Center for Academic Success building. Coordinators, faculty, and staff were on hand to answers questions regarding academic programs, requirements, and professional futures. Admissions, Financial Aid, and Career Development and Advancement were available to assist with concerns about the admission process and requirements, financial aid opportunities, and graduate assistantships.

Kean Undergraduate Students took advantage of this opportunity to obtain information for their respective futures. Graphic Communications Management major Kwaku Ofori said, "It was very informative (The Open House), I have more understanding of the program and its uniqueness to other schools." He stated that only 6% of graduate schools offer the MBA in Global Management. Special Program Presentations included the Global MBA program, Management and Information Systems, and Bullying in the Workplace... alternative conflict resolution styles. Other highlighted programs were Master's programs with Initial Teaching Certification, Reading Specialization, Library Media Specialist, School Counselor, and Occupational Therapy. The Graduate College houses twenty-six master degree programs, several professional diplomas, and forty-five program options. Coordinators and faculty were stationed throughout the first floor of the building to assist attendees with information and concerns to make the graduate school process that much easier. Psychology major, Jessica Egan shared her feelings about the Open house, "I'm excited that Kean has a lot of options, I came here looking for a program of interest that relates to my undergraduate major psychology" Jess attended to learn more about the Masters In Social Work and Masters in Counselor Education programs.
