Paglione Pushes Kean Past NJCU, 4-1

Union, N.J. (4/4/08) - Senior Tom Paglione (Hamilton, N.J.) recorded his second straight complete game win as #3/10 Kean University defeated visiting New Jersey City University, 4-1, Friday afternoon at Jim Hynes Stadium. The game originally scheduled to be played at NJCU, was switched due to poor field conditions. The two teams will now play each other on Friday, April 18th at NJCU.

With the win the Cougars improve to 20-5 overall and 5-1 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) while the loss drops the Gothic Knights to 9-15 and 1-4 in conference action.

NJCU got on the board first in the top of the first as Leomar Paulino (Paterson, N.J.) singled home Mark Hoyer (Irvine, Calif.) who reached on a leadoff single.

KU tied things up in the bottom of the fifth as freshman Jared Orgel (East Hanover, N.J.) scored on a wild pitch after reaching on a leadoff single. The Cougars went ahead for good in their half of the sixth as senior Dan Mattonelli (Hamilton, N.J.) reached on a bases loaded fielders choice, driving in senior Bryan Burke (Lindenhurst, N.Y.). Senior Eric Ammirata (Hamilton, N.J.) also scored on the play as a fielding miscue thrown into the dugout advancing the runners.

Kean tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh as Ammirata recorded an RBI fielders choice, bringing home catcher Kevin O'Neill (Union, N.J.).

Paglione picked up his third win of the season in the complete game effort. He (3-0) allowed seven hits and one unearned run while fanning eight and walking two.

Senior Baldwin Vargas (New York, N.Y.) took the loss after tossing six innings. Vargas (0-1) allowed four runs and four hits. He also walked three and stuck out four.

Offensively O'Neill was 2-for-2 with a run scored in the win for Kean.

The Cougars return to action on Saturday, April 5th when they take on Richard Stockton at noon.
