EWING, N.J. (3/31/09) - Kean scored twice in the bottom of the seventh and sophomore Courtney Smyth (Abington, Pa.) scattered four hits and struck out five batters to lead the Cougars to a split with The College of New Jersey in New Jersey Athletic Conference softball doubleheader action on Tuesday afternoon. The Lions (11-11, 2-2 NJAC) defeated Kean, 1-0, in the opener, before Smyth rebounded the Cougars (10-10, 2-2 NJAC) in the nightcap, posting a 2-1 victory.

GAME ONE: UNEARNED RUN LIFTS TCNJ PAST KEAN, 1-0
The College of New Jersey scored an unearned run in the sixth inning, spoiling a three-hitter on the mound by junior Cassie Shotwell (Dunellen, N.J.) to win the opener, 1-0.

Freshman left-fielder Crystal Lee (Dover, N.J.) led off the sixth inning with a single and would advance to third on an error before scoring on an RBI fielder's choice by sophomore Colleen Cawley (Riverton, N.J.) on the next play for the game's only run.

The Cougars had threatened the half-inning prior when they loaded the bases with one out, as junior centerfielder Allison Lizzi (Cherry Hill, N.J.) and freshman Alicia Banz (Carteret, N.J.) were both hit by a pitch and Shotwell singled. However the Lions got out of the inning with a fielder's choice, throwing Lizzi out at home and a strikeout to end the Kean threat.

Shotwell (5-4) went the distance, scattering three hits with one walk and three strikeouts.

GAME TWO: SEVENTH INNING RALLY LIFTS KEAN IN NIGHTCAP, 2-1
Senior Sara Steinman (Springfield, N.J.) scored on a wild pitch and sophomore Lindsay Kennedy (Piscataway, N.J.) drove in freshman Alicia Banz in the bottom of the seventh inning to lead the Cougars to the 2-1 victory over The College of New Jersey in the nightcap.

TCNJ took a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning when junior Ellen Seavers (Ridgewood, N.J.) doubled to left-center to drive in sophomore Caitlyn Seamster (Edison, N.J.).

Steinman, who broke the single season record with 17 doubles a year ago, led the bottom of the seventh off with her seventh double of the season and after the Cougars loaded the bases with a walk and fielder's choice, Steinman would tie the game when she scored on a wild pitch. Kennedy followed two batters later with a RBI single to right field to score Banz, who had walked earlier in the inning.

On the mound, sophomore right-hander Courtney Smyth scattered four hits and four walks with five strikeouts in the complete game victory.
