Track and Field Has Strong Showing at Lions' Invitational

EWING, N.J. (4/24/10) - The Kean University men's and women's track and field teams competed at the Lions Invitational at The College of New Jersey and set one school record and had five finishes meet ECAC qualifying standards on Saturday afternoon. The men's 4x400-meter relay team of freshman Kevin Persson, juniors Ricardo Garcia and Doug Bonner and senior Matt Gough broke the school record in a ECAC qualifying time of 3:20.64 to finish in fourth place.

Garcia (pictured right) also individually qualified for the ECAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships, as he finished seventh in the 400-meter hurdles in a qualifying time of 55.00 seconds. Persson just missed qualifying in the 400-meter dash, as he finished ninth (50.46 seconds), just 26 hundredths of a second off meeting the ECAC qualifying time.

The Cougars had a pair of top-10 finishes in the 200-meter dash, as freshmen Barry Clark and Joe Badru placed fifth (22.53) and seventh (22.70), respectively.

In the field events, sophomore Aaron Lucas placed fourth in the high jump (1.90 meters) and eighth in the long jump (6.32 meters), while junior John Badala also added a pair of top-10 finishes with a seventh place showing in the shot put (13.63 meters) and 10th place finish in the discus throw (39.41 meters).

Freshman Vincent Schifini placed eighth in the pole vault (4.10 meters) and rookie Max Gordon placed ninth in the javelin throw (52.18 meters).

The women's team had several strong performances in throwing events, with three top 10 and ECAC qualifying finishes.

Junior Jamie Grenger (pictured left) placed fifth in the javelin throw with a ECAC qualifying throw of 36.48 meters. Sophomore Stephanie Cozzolongo, who earlier this season met the ECAC standards with a school-record 38.08 meters in the javelin, surpassed the ECAC standards again with a sixth place finish (36.14 meters).

Senior Sarah Lyon will also compete at the ECAC Championships in the discus throw, as she placed sixth with a qualifying throw of 36.56 meters.
