The West Indian Culture Club shares the cultures of the Caribbean with Kean

Enlightening the Kean community about the cultures of the West Indies and larger Caribbean, and bringing together members who share an interest in the West Indian culture were the goals when the West Indies Culture Club. The club was founded in the spring of 2011. Members pride themselves on community service and promoting unity. These members represent many of the islands of the Caribbean, supporting the status if Kean as one of the most diverse universities in the country. The West Indian Culture Club offers a different outlook on the cultures of the Caribbean, rather than what is typically seen in the media. Expelling stereotypes was a factor that was taken into account when this club was started.

The club participates in community service events and has plans to host cultural programs that discuss growing up in the Caribbean then moving to the United States, and being born in the states and raised by parents of Caribbean descent. The club also seeks to work with other universities such as Seton Hall and Rutgers New Brunswick to host a Caribbean conference.

In a typical club meeting, members discuss potential programs that could have a positive impact on the campus along with issues that may affect the community and the group. They also discuss potential missions and charities to which the group can contribute. The group is not limited to topics that are necessarily related to the West Indies. This growing club is open to everyone from the Caribbean region or anyone who wishes to learn about the islands and their cultures. The club does not discriminate on the basis of nationality, race, ethnicity, or religion; anyone can become a member.

By becoming a member of the West Indian Culture Club, students who register via Cougar Link will have their membership count toward their co-curricular transcript. Their participation in community service activities is also recorded on their co-curricular transcript. Of course, members also learn about the cultures of the Caribbean and have the opportunity to meet new people from these nations.

The club meets on Mondays from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Maxine and Jack Lane Center for Academic Success, room 237. Students who are interested in this club and have questions may send an email to wick@kean.edu.
