Building houses while building a community

Service on Saturdays!

On Saturday, April 21st

At 9:00 a.m when most students are at home sleeping, 20 Kean University students woke up early to help build a new house for an unfortunate family. Students laid out the basement, helped create the centerpiece of the walls, helped build the front and back walls, created the bottom floor of the basement among several other tasks. All 20 students put in their part and had different roles and responsibilities

Mary Kay, a trusted global name in skin care, makeup & body care donated pink helmets to the Habitat for Humanity volunteers. At Habitat for Humanity trips, there are professionals that help the volunteers hammer the nails into the right place and help them throughout the entire building process. Students also helped measure the pieces of wood and other equipment. The family that is receiving the affordable house being built has to commit 300 hours of community service to the house. In this specific case, it was a single mother on site helping to contribute to the house that she will receive in the future.

Diane Prosper, senior psychology major, stated "During the Habitat for Humanity trip, we basically constructed the walls for the basement and the rest of the house. We did a lot of hammering and cutting of wood. While working extra hard, I was able to appreciate construction workers more and think about what this organization is able to do for families and how fortunate I am to have the home i live in with my family.

I felt accomplished afterwards. This was something I've always wanted to do and I was happy that Kean was able to provide that opportunity. I got the chance to meet new people, develop relationships, help build a house, all the while understanding and appreciating what the organization does."
