Registration Time Rolling Around Again

The time has come for students to register for courses for the fall 2014 semester

In the blink of an eye, the time has come to start thinking about classes for next semester. On Wednesday, April 9, 2014, registration will open for the general population of students; however, priority registration for select students begins on Tuesday, April 8, 2014. It is important for all undergraduate students to register for the appropriate courses in order to graduate on time. For this reason, it is required that all undergraduate students receive academic advisement from their advisors prior to registering. If not, a hold will be placed on the student's account disallowing them to register. Advisors are able to guide students in the right direction according to each student's graduation map. Students can locate their advisors' office hours and contact information by logging into their KeanWISE

When registering for classes, some courses may read "Approved Petition Required." This simply means that the student must contact that academic department to receive a Granted Petition for the course. Another notice that is often encountered by students when registering for classes is "Declared Students Only." This means that only students who have been officially declared a major by the academic department in which the course is located are able to register for it.

Sometimes, students are unable to register for a course because that section's full capacity has been reached. If a course is closed, the student must contact the respective academic department to inquire about the rules for that course as well as information regarding how to receive a course overload. A course overload will grant the student permission to take the class despite its already full capacity. Whether or not a student will be able to do this is dependent on the professor's wishes and the department's rules. To avoid the mess that surrounds course overloads, it is imperative that students register as soon as possible to claim a seat while the class is still open.

It is important for students to take advantage of all an advisor has to offer. Not only will advisors know which courses a student should or should not take, but they will also be able to provide any other form of academic guidance as well. For instance, if a student is considering another major, his or her advisor will help weigh the pros and cons of that decision. Scheduling college courses can be almost as stressful as the final exam. So why not remove the stress and get the inside track to graduation by getting an advisor's help and registering on time?
