Understanding the role of computer science at Kean University

The Association for Computing Machinery

The Association for Computing Machinery student chapter [ACM] at Kean University is one of Kean University’s many funded clubs. The ACM is a U.S. based international learning society for computing; it was founded in 1947 and is the world’s largest scientific and educational computing society. The association is nonprofit, it holds more than 100,000 members as of 2011, and is headquartered in New York City. The student chapter of the ACM here at Kean allows students to take advantage of the organization and resources that it can provide.

The student chapter at Kean University has been around for over three years. The goal of the ACM here at Kean University is to help students grasp a better understanding of the involvement of computer science, information technology, and information systems in the world. Students interested in computer science and the technology behind it can truly benefit from participating in the ACM. The ACM has the full support from the College of Computing Sciences; which has enabled them to expand their outreach to people in the field of computer science. Doing this allows the ACM here at Kean to learn how they can apply the knowledge they learned here at Kean in the business world. The ACM is great at helping students get involved in the business world by providing workshops, resume help, and focus on career building. Jeremy McAllister the president of the ACM and a senior Computer science major stated “ we are trying to engage and retain, we focused on career development”

Students interested in the ACM, are welcome to join the next event hosted by the ACM. McAllister had also stated the goals that the ACM will be focusing on, “this academic year we are trying to focus on hands on development and trying to show people coding isn’t so intimidating”. Automatic Data Processing, Inc.  [ADP] is hosting a recruiting event in association with Kean’s chapter of the ACM on November 20th from 3:30 to 4:30pm in the Center of Academic Success room 106 Lecture Hall. The ACM will be independently hosting a Resume and Portfolio Website Workshop which will take place on December 6 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The event will be taking place in Willis Hall, Room 400. The ACM generally holds a meeting once a month during the academic year. Students who are interested in learning more about the ACM here at Kean University can sit in on the meetings located in Willis Hall 400 on Thursdays at 3:30 p.m. These meetings usually last an hour. If a student is interested in becoming a member, the student must be full-time and attend at least 2 of the 4 meetings held each month. For any information or questions regarding the ACM, students are welcome to reach out to the ACM via Cougarlink.
