Many people choose a major and have no idea what the major stands for. Luckily enough for English majors, the School of English Studies is hosting a Convocation in September on the dates of the Monday, 21, Tuesday, 22 and Thursday, 24.

Kimberly Alvarado, who is an academic specialist in the English Studies Department, comments that “the Convocation will serve as a timely and useful introduction to the English major. It aims to give students an overview of their major: its track, its extra-curricular activities and its linkages with the College of Education, its philosophy, mission and culture.”

At this Convocation the topics that will be discussed are as follows:

  • Required test for most English majors like the PRAXIS and its preparation sessions  and the State Content Exam
  • The School of English Studies mission statement, values and dispositions
  • The resources available to English majors, such as the honor society Sigma Tau Delta and the Literary Magazine Creation Space
  • The Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs), which are statements to help English writing and literature track majors to recognize what they should know and demonstrate by graduation.

As Alvarado says, “this meeting is for all English majors…including those in Education with concentrations in an English content area.”

She also continues to say that freshmen, sophomore and transfer students who have not declared a major can also attend the Convocation to learn more about the English major.  Each meeting starts at 3:15 p.m. and ends at 4:30 p.m.

One can attend any of the following three dates listed below. There is no registration required and refreshments will be served.

  • On Monday, September 21, and Tuesday, September 22, the meeting will be held in Hennings Hall (HH) room 113
  • On Thursday, September 24, the meeting will be held in the Green Lane Academic Building (GLAB) in room 306. GLAB is located by the train station across from the main campus, right above the Barnes and Noble bookstore.
