Throughout the semester there are several volunteer events students can take part in. But on one particular day, students are being asked to set everything aside for a few hours to perform acts for the betterment of the community.

The center for leadership and service (CLS) would like to showcase how much Kean University students care about the community on October 10, 2015, through Cougars that Care. Cougars that Care is when there are several community service projects taking place at once, at various locations. There are four scheduled major projects:

  • Habitat for Humanity will take place from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. This service opportunity will allow students to truly experience the process of building a house. Depending on the state of the project for the day, volunteers stand the chance to install a beam, hammer and nail a wall together, work with power tools—once learned how to operate—or possibly be an artist and paint a wall or two.

  • Adopt-A-Park will take place from 9:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Students will spend time in one of the 36 Union County Parks, which collectively span a 6,200 aches. Potential projects of the day could include picking up litter, getting rid of unwanted plants, repairing fences, among other needs the worksite calls for.

  • Atria Senior Living will take place from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. Volunteers will spend some time with senior citizens and have the opportunity to complete an arts and crafts project, participate in some light recreational activities, or sit down and have a nice conversation.

  • Community Food Bank of New Jersey will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The day could consist of stuffing envelopes to be sent for donations, stacking food goods or clothes in the stock room, or packaging food.

There will also be additional projects hosted by campus groups, organizations, and athletic teams, so make sure to check Cougar Link frequently the days leading up to Cougars that Care.

Volunteers will find out the day of the service project what the activity will be. Make sure to dress appropriately for weather conditions and any of the possible activities to be completed. In order to participate, individuals are required to register for the project of their choice.

Registration can take place at https://kean.collegiatelink.net/organization/cls/calendar/details/686148. Be sure to look at each of the community service opportunities as there are various start and end times depending on the project.
