An alumnus of Kean University has recently won two Grammys! Alumnus Tom Coyne was lucky on February 15, 2016, to win two Grammys but those aren’t his first Grammy wins. As a matter of fact he has won several others beginning with one of Adele’s first Grammy wins. Ever since 2012, the Senior Master Engineer has been receiving Grammy nomination after nomination, winning several of them.

Coyne is a mastering engineer who has been working in the music industry for over 20 years. He currently resides in Morristown and works at Sterling Sound Studio in Manhattan. He has worked with some of the top award-winning artists for years and ironically earned a commercial design degree from Kean University (known as Kean College when he attended). Coyne began in the music industry sweeping floors and making coffee at the mastering labs of Frankford/Wayne. There he learned how to master engineer and landed his first hit with Jersey Disco Legends Kool and the Gang’s with their first song “Ladies’ Night.”

Coyne has worked with some of the top artists of today including Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, Adele, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Justin Bieber and more. He has been nominated for over 10 Grammy awards and has won majority. He mastered Adele’s first Grammy win on her album “21” when it won Album of the Year in 2012 and that was his first Grammy win. He has been nominated for several others after that win and has won many more. At this year’s Grammy Awards, Coyne won Album of the Year with Taylor Swift’s album “1989.” He also won Record of the Year for “Uptown Funk” by Mark Ronson featuring Bruno Mars and was nominated for several other songs like “Can’t Feel My Face” by The Weekend and “Blank Space” by Taylor Swift.  Not only has Coyne won several Grammys, but he is also known for engineering some of Billboard’s top ten singles with songs like “Hello” by Adele and “What Do You Mean?” by Justin Bieber in which both songs held the number one spot for weeks.

Coyne has worked with many artists since he first began in the music industry and that includes artists like Backstreet Boys, Destiny’s Child and Amy Whinehouse. To learn more about Coyne and the music he has tweaked to perfection, visit his page on the Sterling Sound webpage.
