The Ultimate Guide To Graduation Checklist

Graduates of 2015 excited to receive their diplomas once and for all
The Cougar’s Byte

With already a month of the semester gone, it seems that time is flying by at an alarming rate towards Thursday, May 19, 2016 – less than 100 days are left until Kean University’s Undergraduate Commencement Ceremony; where goodbyes are said to the senior class of 2016. For those graduating, it might feel like they’re ready to go…credits are near-completed and the application has been approved but there are some tasks they might have missed:

  1. Class Rings – Class rings are tradition among many universities. Throughout the year, vendors were present in the Miron Student Center (MSC) Atrium offering students a variety of styles and custom engraving options. The next opportunity to order a ring on campus is from Tuesday, April 5, 2016, through Thursday, April 7, 2016, from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the MSC Atrium.
  2. Senior Portraits – They say a picture is worth 1,000 words and there is no better way to commemorate graduation (and the hard work to get there) than a professional photo. The next round of senior portrait sessions will be from Monday, March 14, 2016, through Thursday, March 17, 2016, in MSC room 315 between the hours of 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. Schedule a seating at www.ouryear.com, use school code 518 and keep the appropriate attire in mind: Men - suit/business attire; Women - blouse/business attire.
  3. Caps and Gowns – Don’t show up to graduation with a t-shirt and jeans or a gown that is ill fitting. The deadline for cap and gown orders is Tuesday, March 29, 2016. The distribution of orders will begin Monday, May 9, 2016, in MSC room 228 between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. Place an order at www.kean.edu/commencement.
  4. Senior Formal – This year’s senior formal theme is “Arabian Nights”! Tickets are currently on sale for $50 and can be purchased at the Wilkins Theatre Box Office (two tickets per student ID). The event will take place at the Sheraton Hotel in Parsippany, NJ from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. Ticket prices include a cocktail hour, a full-course dinner and unlimited soft drinks.
  5. Yearbooks – Many people don’t think of yearbooks as a college thing, but they totally are. Students can find information about ordering a 2016 yearbook at www.kean.edu/commencement.
  6. Update Resume/LinkedIn Profile – College is over; it is now time to apply for the jobs that will begin the desired career. Students should keep their resume/LinkedIn up to date to avoid embarrassment or rejection.
  7. Letters of Recommendation – Before students leave campus forever, they might want to consider requesting a letter of recommendation from a favorite professor or advisor to take with them into the quest for employment.
  8. Decorate Cap – After students receive their caps shortly before commencement, get creative! Search through Pinterest, Instagram or Tumblr for ideas on how to design the one and only college graduation cap.
  9. Unsubscribe to Campus Notifications – The last thing a graduate wants is to be woken up early in the morning with a phone call saying the university is closed when he or she graduated six  months ago. To unsubscribe, log on at www.mir3.com/kean and make the appropriate changes.
  10. Say Goodbyes – In the final days on campus, graduates should say goodbye to all of their friends, classmates, professors, advisors, baristas, faculty and favorite spots on campus (including the parking lot). This might seem depressing but don’t forget to say hello to a whole new chapter in life!
