Basketballs shot across Harwood Arena on Thursday, March 24, 2016, as over 100 people filed in to participate in the sixth annual Rebound for Haiti.

Rebound for Haiti has become a staple of the spring semester at Kean University, going strong for six years now. Haitian Student Association (HSA) President Jonathan Medor has high hopes to keep the tradition running for a while.

This year’s tournament was dominated by a team from Montclair State University, who ended the game with a score of 78 – 70. At the end of the day, Rebound for Haiti serves a greater purpose than just achieving glory in a game of basketball.

“We take pride in hosting Rebound [for] Haiti because of the cause,” said Medor. “It helped out with the relief efforts of Haiti and the social development of the Haitian American community in New Jersey today.”

All likes of students, faculty and staff came to contribute to the continuation of support for Haiti, which is located in an area frequently affected by natural disasters. In 2010, an earthquake of a 7.0 magnitude struck the island, killing hundreds of thousands and displacing over a million Haitians.

This year, HSA set a goal of $1,000 to raise but unfortunately just missed it with a total of about $800. Medor was not discouraged by this news, but took it as a challenge to set forth new events and campaigns to raise awareness and funds.

“This year the money was raised for the New Jersey Haitian Student Association Scholarship Fund,” explained Medor. “This fund will enable any Haitian or Haitian American man or woman a chance to receive higher education away from any financial difficulties that may appear.”

Other events on HSA’s agenda include the Haitian Flag Raising Ceremony on Tuesday, May 3, 2016, at the Miron Student Center (MSC) patio flagpole between 3:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Another annual success of the organization is Kreyolfest, which will take place in Downs Hall on Saturday, May 7, 2016, from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. and will feature food, music and entertainment in the spirit of Haiti.

The HSA encourages people to join it in its weekly meetings and upcoming events. For those interested in more information, email at hsa@kean.edu or Medor’s personal email at medorjo@kean.edu.
