New to campus this semester, the Office of Student Government has opened the Commuter Resource Center (CRC) in room 130 of Hutchinson Hall.

The CRC was open for the first week of classes, but the grand opening event took place on Thursday, September 8, 2016. It is open 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Fridays. Catered to the commuter student population, the center is designed to engage, involve and support students through various programs and offering essential resources.

Part-time professional staff member Jia McRae is one of the Academic Specialists who helps oversee the services and operations of the CRC, along with student staff and Student Government members.

"CRC came from the idea of needing a space specifically dedicated to our large commuter population, where commuter students can get valuable information for on and off campus resources," McRae said.

Having already occupied the Satellite Office in Hutchinson Hall, Student Government desired to utilize the space to expand its services offered to students.

A service offered by the CRC for solely commuter students is the distribution of commuter lockers on campus. For students in need of an on-campus locker or those who need to renew their's, they can sign up at the CRC.

All Kean University students have access to the microwave, fridge, student workstations and Xerox machine housed in the CRC.

"Students can also use their laptops in the lounges and print remotely to the color Xerox," McRae added.

The events offered by the CRC are designed to bring the commuter student population together. The major purpose is to provide students with beneficial resources to help make their commute to and from Kean University, as well as their daily lives, simpler. The CRC is a link to more on-campus information, events and services.

McRae shared that an example of an event that the CRC will host host is Commuters Week in November.

"During this week, the CRC will host fun, social and educational workshops to teach and/or update them on travel discounts, safety tips and all else that we have to offer," McRae explained.
