Ever wondered about Kean University's various centers or clinics? Whether a student is an incoming freshman or going into their last year of college, it is important to utilize the help provided on campus. Whether one is a resident or commuter Kean has many centers that supports its students.

There are various centers on campus that aim to cater to students' needs and education, like the Student Health Services (SHS), the Involvement Center, the The Maxine and Jack Lane Center for Academic Success (CAS) and many more.

The SHS is located in Downs Hall and provides various services for its students. Services are provided to all students enrolled in classes for the current or upcoming semester. The services provided are primary care, gynecology, STI testing, HIV testing, LGBTQ services and many more.

Students should make an appointment for general medical issues such as:

  • Cold and flu
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Urinary tract infection
  • Pregnancy tests
  • Strep tests
  • Abdominal pain
  • Injuries
  • Rashes
  • Allergies

For gynecology services, female students are encouraged to contact the health services with questions and concerns regarding their sexual health. Appointments can be made even if the student is not sexually active, but it is recommended to bring an insurance card to an appointment. Female students can make appointments for:

  • Routine breast and pelvic exams
  • Pap tests
  • STI and HIV testing
  • GYN complaints
  • Birth control

For STI testing, students can talk to a provider about which test would be best for them, although most testing can be done through a urine sample. Aside from STI testing, students can also be tested for HIV during the same appointment.

HIV testing is done through a rapid test kit where only a drop of blood is needed for results as fast as 20 minutes. The SHS wants to ensure the confidentiality of both STI and HIV testings.

With that said, the staff prides itself in the knowledge of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) students' medical issues. Students can expect to receive screening, literature, treatment and referrals for certain problems.

SHS strives to offer an encouraging environment for students to seek healthcare and support for their sexual orientation or gender identity/expression.

To schedule an appointment for any of the services students must:

  • Visit http://kean.studenthealthportal.com
  • Log in by entering your Kean ID number and password
  • Click on the “Appointment Scheduling” drop down menu and select “Schedule Appointment.”
  • Select a date
  • Select a reason for appointment
  • Select the time and provider preferred

After those steps, a confirmation page will appear with the date, time and provider of the appointment. Students will then be able to verify their appointment or view upcoming appointments.

The Involvement Center is located at the Miron Student Center (MSC) in room 303. The Involvement Center seeks to encourage a student's connection towards the campus, whether they want to join Greek life, the student government, leadership or volunteer.

The Involvement Center is connected between the Miron Student Center Operations and Event Management Office, Office of Student Government and the Center for Leadership and Service, which seeks to be a location for students to be active.

The Involvement Center consists of three conference rooms for executive board or small group meetings, a resource room complete with student group supplies and tools, lockers for student groups and mailboxes for all recognized groups.

A number of services provided are:

  • Computer workstations
  • Student group supplies
  • Room reservations
  • Student group forums
  • Student group recognition
  • Student group development

The Involvement Center staff is trained to help connect interested students with organizations and activities that fit their interests or previous involvement in high school. Within Kean University, there are over 130 different clubs and organizations that cater to each individuals interests.

CAS was created by President Dawood Farahi in 2003 as a way to provide excellence and accessibility for students willing to learn. With the idea of improving and expanding a student's education, the opening of the CAS building was implemented with various services. CAS also has the goal of improving the quality, consistency and availability of academic support services to students.

CAS is organized in the following divisions:

  • Academic dismissal appeals
  • Career development and advancement services
  • International student services
  • Placement testing
  • Registration and orientation services
  • Tutoring and learning support services
  • Writing center
