Center of the University and the heart of the campus

Joanna Kristine Ninal, Staff Writer

At the core of campus, the building that runs majority of Kean University's organizations and activities, lies the Miron Student Center (MSC).

The MSC usually handles a large amount of students because the building offers a game room, food options, office space and meeting rooms for many groups.

Inside the MSC, students can choose to eat at the food court, which offers pizza, pasta, various entrees, a salad bar and some to-go items. In addition, there is a Jersey Mike's Subs station where students can get a customized or original submarine sandwich, Sonos, Chef's Corner and Green Zebra.

The MSC food court hours of operations are:

  • Monday through Thursday: 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 pm
  • Friday: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.  (Jersey Mike’s Only)
  • Saturday: 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Another food area students can sit down, eat and hang out altogether is the Cougar's Den. Similar to the food court, there is an option to dine in or have food to-go. Their open hours are:

  • Monday through Thursday: 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
  • Friday: 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Saturday: 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Kean's Gourmet Dining says, "Cougars' Den features all natural ingredients and a glass-enclosed atrium dining room, the Cougars’ Den provides a relaxing atmosphere for the university community to escape the daily bustle of campus life. The Cougars’ Den offers a variety of gourmet soups, sandwiches and salads and authentic Asian options."

By the MSC lobby, there are more food options for the students, such as Smashburger, Auntie Anne's and the Outtakes quick cuisine.

According to Gourmet Dining's website, they said, "Smashburger offers burgers, chicken sandwiches, salads, sides, and shakes. We are known for the smashing technique of 'Smashed Fresh, Served Delicious'. Our smashed burgers are always made-to-order, never frozen, smashed and seared to perfection on our grill." In addition, they added that, "Auntie Anne’s is a bakery chain specializing in various pretzels with a wide variety of dips. We also offer Pretzel Dogs, beverages and frozen drinks."

The hours of Smashburger and Auntie Anne's are:

  • Monday through Thursday: 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Friday: 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. (4 p.m. for Auntie Anne's).

At Outtakes, there are more than just food options to-go. There are snacks, baked goods, groceries and much more offered. It serves as a mini convenience store. The hours of operation are:

  • Monday through Thursday: 9 a.m. to 11 p.m.
  • Friday: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Saturday: 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Sunday: 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.

With all the food choices available for the students, MSC appeals to  students and the various decisions that can be made while having an education at Kean University.

The MSC is also a place for academic fulfillment, as well as personal enjoyment. Need some information on where to go? Students can reach the MSC information desk at 908.737.5222 or visit them during their hours of operations.

Need to print a paper for a class? The MSC computer lab offers printing services, as well as regular internet services, to the students.

Bored and need to kill time before a class? The MSC game room offers plenty of choices for entertainment. From video games to billiards, the game room is the common place for students to hang out with their friends and just relax. The Little Theatre at the MSC may have a workshop, lecture or performance for the students and might fascinate them with a thing or two.

The normal hours for the MSC during the fall and spring semesters can be found at the Kean University website.

With all these places to go in one building, students find themselves spending a good amount of their time at the MSC.

Of course, the MSC not only provides lounges for students on the second and third floor, students can find the Office of Student Government and the Center of Leadership and Service on those floors as well.

Home is where the heart is, and at Kean University, the heart is where MSC is!
