A Comedy Central star is coming to Kean’s campus.

James Davis, the host of the network’s Hood Adjacent, will be performing his nationally acclaimed stand-up act at Wilkins Theatre on April 4.

The aforementioned show, centered around Davis’ life growing up in south central Los Angeles, focuses on his perspective of lifestyles between the neighborhood he grew up in and the “hood” situated merely blocks away.

Although adjacent to the rugged and ulterior lifestyle of living in the hood, Davis walked a different path during childhood. His mother enrolled him in a mostly Caucasian private school, and she even went as far as to sign him up for golfing lessons at an expensive country club on the weekends.

Davis continued his education as an English major at Pomona College, turning down a golf scholarship offer from Hampton University. After college, however, James ultimately made the decision to take up acting full-time.

Bursting onto the scene with creative and funny impersonation videos of Barack Obama, Davis earned himself national attention and notoriety. Through his many works on the Internet, he eventually earned himself time on BET, The Late Late Show with James Corden, Wild N’ Out, and presently Comedy Central and more. His upbeat, attention-grabbing humor and lively performances have earned him many laughs throughout the nation.

Appealing to Kean’s students, Davis will speak on a multitude of potential, relatable topics to college attendees. He will not only mention personal experiences, but also the potential rewards and benefits to obtaining a college degree.

Additionally, Davis’ humor will focus on modern-day issues surrounding minority groups and those living in and adjacent to rough neighborhoods. Stemming from issues such as police brutality, the ostracism of African American women in popular media, race-based inequalities, and the state of African American people in America, Davis not only looks to make an audience laugh, but to also make them think. Offering different and realistic perspectives will allow those that attend to have a more worldly and understanding view of Davis and others’ backgrounds and tribulations.

Tickets are currently on sale at the box office in Wilkins Theatre. Prices range from $10-30. Those looking to attend should anticipate the event to run from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Tickets can also be ordered directly by contacting Kean Stage at (908) 737-7469. Hope to see you there for a night of laughs and knowledge!
