On Wednesday, January 18, students, alumni and others gathered in Harwood Arena to meet the Greeks. From 6 to 10:30 p.m. students interested in joining a sorority or fraternity got the chance to meet with Greek Life.

With Kean University being one of the most diverse universities in the United States, there were a variety of sororities and fraternities attending the event. Attendees also had the chance to meet the new sorority that will be joining Kean University this semester.

“Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. is a public service organization  founded on the campus of Howard University in 1913 by 22 dedicated women who built this in Christian principles and we are looking to bring back the Delta’s to Kean,” said Karen Cooper, member of the reactivation team.

Students and alumni alike took advantage of the event by talking to the current members of the organizations and hearing about their personal experiences with Greek Life. While alumni visited their alma mater, students asked different organizations how they stand out from the rest.

“Sigma Beta Chi is a different organization because of our philanthropy of Cancer. We love doing community service [and] we are the girls you can always party with,” Michelle Kiamie, president and new member educator of Sigma Beta Chi.

The first half of the event had organizations introducing themselves and the principles they practice. The second half focused on Greek Life performing specialized dances, chants, steps and more.

“Nu Delta Pi is all about Brotherhood for this day forward,” Brian Velez, a member of Nu Delta Pi said.

Greek organizations give you brother or sisterhood forever. Every organization relies on principles and morals which makes everyone unique. Going Greek is a great way to get involved on campus, do community service, and broaden your friendships.

There are requirements to join Greek organizations including being a full time student, having done a minimum of 12 credits, and a minimum of 2.6 GPA. If you are looking to join Greek Life upcoming there are many events on Cougar Link for newcomers to meet the sorority or fraternity.
