On the night of October 25, 2014 the Nu Sigma Phi had their 75 anniversary at the Science Mathematical and Technology [STEM] building. It was an exciting night for all current members and alumni members of the fraternity, as most of the members had not visited the university since the 25 anniversary of Nu Sigma Phi. The anniversary began with a cocktail and hors d’oeuvres hour followed by dinner. One of the founding fathers came to celebrate the 75 anniversary, Henry Nemeira. Nemeira was a charter member of Nu Sigma Phi and graduated from Kean University in 1941.

On the night of Friday, October 24, 2014 the pep rally started off homecoming weekend with various contests, great performances, and videos created by several Kean University organizations. For two hours, students enjoyed the night as they watched each performance in awe, and as they crossed their fingers, they hoped to win one of the several contests. Overall, the pep rally was a great preview to the great homecoming weekend to come.

On Friday, October 25, 2014 Greek organization alumni had reunited to have an enjoyable night that was filled with stories of old memories. The attendees enjoyed the night with cocktails and many hors d’oeuvres. There was approximately 12 Greek organizations being represented at the reunion that night, which consisted of a mixture of Kean University Greek organizations and nationally—known Greek organizations. The night was an enjoyable event for everyone in attendance as most have not seen their brothers or sisters for many years.

From Friday, October 17 through Sunday, October 19 many enjoyed watching the play At Liberty Hall¸ a play that would make someone laugh with tears of joy. At Liberty Hall took place at The Stage in the carriage house by the Liberty Hall Museum, a small area where only a limited amount of people were allowed in. This crowd-pleasing, sold-out show had many great reviews from the audience and will always be remembered as an educational and entertaining play.

On Tuesday, October 14, the vice president of student affairs hosted the “It’s On Us” program in the University Center [UC] pre-function lobby. It proved to be a great success as a large amount of people continuously walked in and out of the lobby to take the pledge against sexual assault. Despite what it may seem like, there are vast amounts of people who fall victim tosexual assault. Every two minutes in the United States, sexual assault takes place, which makes about 230,000 victims who are 12 years and older per year. Stephanie Roggina, a security guard at Kean University, said that “spreading the word of sexual assault is important so people are more aware”; it is imperative to intervene instead of being a bystander in those kinds of situations.

Kean University is a very diverse university. Classrooms are filled with students who come from different backgrounds, and in the instance of some students, from different countries. Campus-wide and all over America people celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month and Black History Month in recognition of those who are of Hispanic and African descent, and the accomplishments of their cultures. At Kean University, there will be a celebration of a culture that isn’t popularly known. Please join the office of residential student services [RSS] as they help recognize Greek culture!

Many students experience anxiety due to exams or just because he or she are finding it hard to handle work, school, and a social life collectively. Luckily, there are several workshops on campus that students, who are struggling with anxiety, can go to.

On the night of Wednesday, October 8, 2014, The Good Lie premiered at the auditorium of the New Jersey Center for Science, Technology, and Mathematics [STEM] building. The Good Lie is about the lives of five child refugees who survived the war that was happening in South Sudan between the years of 1983 and 2005. The movie depicts the journey of the five child refugees—Jeremiah, Theo, Abital, Paul, and Marnere—who traveled thousands of miles to a refugee camp in Kenya as they try to escape the treacherous war underneath their feet. Many years later, the group of children—now adults—are able to leave the refugee camp and find a home in the United States; only later realizing that their lives would be completely changed as they try to get an education, keep a steady job, and learn the customs of an American citizen.

A great deal of children are privileged and able to get their hands on books. But many, especially those who live in poverty, never touched a book in their lives. Luckily a non-profit organization is helping with this situation by distributing millions of books to young children each year so that children who are under-privileged will not go to school without any vocabulary or reading skills. In hopes of reaching to all under-privileged children, English Honor Society Sigma Tau Delta—and many other organizations—is helping the non-profit organization Reach Out and Read by donating children books to help spread knowledge to children in need.

Some students would agree that parking can be a major challenge. At certain times of the day, students, faculty and staff have trouble finding a parking spot before going to class or work, which can cause lateness. Students have brought up this concern to Kean University administrators, their professors and student leaders. Over the past four weeks, many ideas to address this challenge have been put forth - among which is the construction of a structured parking facility.

Freshman class, get your computer mouses and fingers ready because the time to vote for the freshman class president and officers is just days away. From October 14 through October 15, the student body of the freshman class will be able to vote for who they believe should be the voice of the freshman class. The presidential candidates are: Justin Carrasco, Emma Chelstowski, Alanna Piper, John Simons, Jazmiera Smothers, and Brielle Wade-Adams. Freshmen, proceed with caution and choose wisely, for whomever is elected to be the freshman class president will be tasked with representing your concerns.

On Monday, September 29, 2014 the office of student government hosted Pop-Up Breakfast to celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month. Students and faculty were able to enjoy delicious Hispanic food at no cost beginning at 8:30 a.m. and ending at 9:30 a.m., allowing anyone who did not have breakfast earlier that morning to grab a quick bite and taste the several flavorful plates presented. Crista Sandres, a senior English education major and member of student government, comments on how celebrating National Hispanic Heritage month is important to the community of Kean: “we like to recognize diversity,” which is what Kean University is all about.

From Thursday, October 16 to Sunday, October 19, relax, laugh, and enjoy the play Premier Stages is presenting, At Liberty Hall written by James Christy and directed by Kel Haney. At Liberty Hall, is a humorous play about two high school students—Cristian Rosario, a Dominican tenth grader, and Alexander Hamilton, who just so happens to be the subject of Cristian’s history paper—who recently moved to New Jersey. This story will be told through the eyes and hand-written letters of both Hamilton and Rosario as various facts about Hamilton unfolds.

Attending college is not easy as students worry about keeping a healthy social life, a steady job, and parent-pleasing-grades. One way to end the semester in a extraordinary way is by achieving the minimum grade point average [GPA] requirement to get onto the Dean’s List.
