On the evening of Wednesday, Nov. 15, the Iota Rho chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha will present its annual competition titled "Stroll Like an Alpha" to a packed audience inside of Wilkins Theater. From 8 to 10 p.m., the competition will be filled with improvised dances, strolls, and cheers by the female students, which will fill a night with unforgettable fun for those that attend.
The competition will feature female students from schools across the state of New Jersey, including students from Kean University, Rutgers University Newark, Montclair State University, New Jersey City University and Bloomfield College. Within the contest, the girls who signed up will be tasked with forming a team for their respective school to perform strolls, or traditional dances made popular by the fraternity itself.
For an event that has been done across the country, the fraternity's main purpose is to serve the attending students a night of fun and enjoyment, while simultaneously giving an insight into Greek life for those who are not part of a Greek organization. The coordinators of the event plan to also provide a new perspective to non-Greeks about the difficulties of preparing for a step show or other public performances.
Though the fraternity has yet to decide the final reward for the winning team at the end of the night, graceful rewards of cash prizes, gift cards, or a pizza party await the victors. A percentage of the proceeds from the event will go to charity as well.
The Iota Rho Chapter Alpha Phi Alpha is a metro chapter, meaning that they serve as the dominant chapter at these five schools equally. Therefore, each of the five schools will have a team to battle it out on this Wednesday night.
The Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity was the first intercollegiate Greek-letter organization for African-American students, established at Cornell University on December 4, 1906. The Greek organization was built out of the need to promote close association and support among African-Americans during the beginning of the 20th century. The fraternity has had a long history of being socially involved while attacking issues, such as of civil rights, social issues and human rights, head-on.
For those that are interested in attending this festival of dance and amusement, tickets can be bought at the Willkins Theater Box Office for the price of $5. Additionally, contact the Iota Rho Chapter's headquarters at their email of ipalphas@gmail.com
