Tasks to tackle for a smooth final day as an undergraduate

Benito Nieves

As this year's graduating undergraduate students eagerly await their big moment on May 12, 2011, proactive planning should be their number one priority. Some final, yet crucial details are needed for the graduating student to take heed of. Below is a check list of items and dates to mark up on planners for a smooth undergraduate graduation:Cap and gown: This academic attire is the critically important for a graduating student to have for the big day. Extra caps and gowns will not be available at the graduation site. It is unlikely that any student wants to stand out on this day for negative reasons; adorned in anything other than tradition graduation-wear is a striking reason.

The deadline for turning in one's measurements for their cap and gown is Tuesday, March 22, 2011. Students may submit these measurements through an online order form at college.jostens.com/Jostens. The fee for the cap and gown is included in the graduation fee.

Students can pick up their cap and gown by presenting their Kean ID card in the University Center atrium on Tuesday, May 3, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Wednesday, May 4, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Thursday, May 5, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Friday, May 6, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Saturday, May 7, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Monday, May 9, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Tuesday, May 10, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.; and Wednesday, May 11, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information, please call the University Center Administration Office at 908-737-5200.

Cap and gowns should be pressed and approximately eight inches from the ground. Studetns may hem them if needed. Caps should never be worn tilted to the sides and should face forward.

Yearbook and senior portraits: The yearbook of Kean University, The Memorabilia, is one great way to have history in hand. A graduating senior should make sure they are a presence in that piece of history. The first step to doing this is by making an appointment for their senior portrait.

Lors Studios is the designated as the official photographer for The Memorabilia. There is no charge for the initial sitting; a $10 fee will apply to any additional sittings that are requested by the senior. Seniors can make an online appointment for their senior portrait at http://44v.lorsstudio.timetrade.com or by calling the Lors Customer Service line at 1-800-891-3409. The last day to take a picture for the yearbook is Friday, April 29, 2011.

As a convenience, students may order their yearbook during their senior portrait sitting. The fee for the yearbook will be $40 and will it be mailed to the student's home following their graduation; this is so that photography from the graduation day is inclusive in the yearbook. Seniors can also order their yearbook online, through the publisher, Herff Jones by logging onto www.yearbookordercenter.com. Once at the web page, students will be prompted to enter their order number; this number is 4038. There is a $3.50 processing fee when ordering online. Students must order their book by May 28, 2011.

Class ring: Ordering a personalized class ring is another traditional and elegant way to capture the higher education journey through memorabilia. A class ring can be altered so that it reflect the exact etchings, stone, and design that fit the student who is ordering it. Personal messages and academic achievements can also be added to the design of the ring.

The Ring Vendor will be in the Hutchinson Hall lobby on Monday, March 28 and Tuesday, March 29, 2011, from noon to 6 p.m., and Wednesay, March 30, 2011, from noon to 3 p.m.
