Greek of the Week: John Winkler

The motto of "brotherhood from this day forward" is more than just a saying to John Winkler, senior film major. Winkler states that "anyone who becomes a brother to Nu Delta Pi will always and forever be my brother. He is important to my life and will forever be above me." The members of his fraternity are not only others that share a common, interest but his brothers and best friends.

John Winkler joined Nu Delta Pi his freshmen year at Kean University. Winkler was born in Brooklyn, New York and raised in Staten Island. As an out-of-state student, he did not know what to expect from a New Jersey college, or from the state itself. When Winkler found Nu Delta Pi promoting their fraternity at a Meet the Greeks event, he was immediately impressed, "because of how similar their value system was to my own. We share many of the same values especially respect for others. We find it very important to treat others the way we want to be treated as individuals," Winkler states.

Winkler chose to rush Nu Delta Pi because of "how kind and loving brothers should be." Winkler states that "the best part of being a brother of Nu Delta Pi is that it is really hard to generalize us because we are not all so different and it makes us unique as a fraternity."

Although he appears reserved, Winkler is currently a member of the Film Club and president of Nu Delta Pi. He states, "people often think of me as an underdog because I come off as quiet and [of] short stature, but I have been president of my fraternity for the last two years. I make sure everything runs smoothly and it is a leadership position filled with a lot of responsibilities."

In his senior year of high school, Winkler became interested in film because of his creativity and originality. He chose to attend Kean University because it was close to home -- but far enough -- and it was the only school with a film program. He enjoys editing and animation but likes all different mediums. "Film is not easy to do but I like to be challenged. I have a desire to put something out there everyone can appreciate and relate to."

When Winkler has free time, he enjoys drawing, spending time with his friends, and co-owns a tee shirt company in Staten Island, New York. After graduation, he hopes to find a job with a company where he can utilize all the skills he obtained with his film degree. He is in the process of visiting companies for jobs to see where he will apply after graduation.
