Athletic training is an allied health profession recognized by the American Medical Association with a specialization that is focused on the complete health needs of an athlete. Athletic trainers work under the supervision of a team and are responsible for the prevention and care of athletic injuries. Athletic trainers are one of the first healthcare professionals on the scene when injuries occur during a game or practice and they must be able to recognize, evaluate, and assess injuries as well as provide immediate care when needed.

Through the athletic training program at Kean University, students learn about preventions

Kean University offers bachelors in science degree in athletic training accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education. Graduating students receive their degree and then qualify to take the Board of Certification Examination [BOC]. Under the governance of the State Board of Medical Examiners, those New Jersey residents who pass the BOC Exam can qualify to be licensed and work as an athletic trainer in New Jersey. There are currently 171 students in the athletic training program. In addition to the university admission requirements, the athletic training program has their own requirements as well. Freshmen and sophomores work on requirements to apply for admission to the program at the end of their sophomore year.

Students in the program are responsible for field experience to gain knowledge in athletic training among several physical education classes that vary from strength fitness to athletic injury diagnosis. The clinical observations are important for students to be exposed to the different types of injuries including high-risk, general medical, upper or lower extremity in different sites and populations. The athletic training department has seen their students move on to become athletic trainers for schools, universities, and professional sports teams including the National Football League [NFL], physician assistants, podiatrists and administrators.
