The Odyssey of the Century

A funny play for the family

Kathryn Jackson

The soft lull of the ocean rocks the boat gently. The sweet breeze ruffles through the billowing sails. For a moment, the audience is transported to a different time and place where mythical beasts roam the roaring seas and goddesses visit mortal men in their sleep. In reality, the stage is set with tall structures posing as stone and mountainous ranges. Sheer drapes frame the stage with glowing lights. "On Stranger Tides", a song listed in the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean soundtrack plays in the background before the performance. It sets the tone for a magnificent time.

In the last week of February -- opening night being on the February 25, 2012 -- The Odyssey debuted in the Wilkins TheatreTheatreSharkeyTelemachus

The Odyssey is an adaptation and was originally directed by Mary Zimmerman. It was also adapted from the translation by Robert Fitzgerald. This production had a huge overtone of comedy and was directed by E. Teresa Choate and Anna DeMers. The musical director was Charles Vincent Burwell. In other roles, Natalie Bailey played Circe, Alcippe, a Lotus-Eater, and a sheep. Steven Carter played Telemachus, a Lotus-Eater, and a sheep. All the cast and crew involved in the play performed wonderfully and created a great show.
