EWING, N.J. (02/13/08) - Rookie guard Keith Williams (Jersey City, N.J.) scored a game-high 22 points to lead the Kean University men's basketball team to a 66-60 victory over host The College of New Jersey in a pivotal New Jersey Athletic Conference South Division match-up on Wednesday evening. Williams connected on 7-of-11 shots and added four steals to lead the Cougars (9-14, 4-7 NJAC) to their third straight victory and built a two-game lead in the win column for the third and final playoff spot in the NJAC South Division.
The Lions (6-16, 2-8 NJAC) placed four in double-figures, as senior guard Jeff Warner (Jackson, N.J.) led the way with 12 points, eight rebounds and five assists.
Kean closed the first half on 13-3 run to erase a 10-point deficit and tie the game at 26-26 heading into the break, as Williams scored all 10 of his first-half points in the run, including a three-pointer with 1:14 remaining to knot the game up at halftime.
Senior guard Lamar Wright (Galloway, N.J.) (pictured left) added eight points and three rebounds in the opening half, while Warner had nine points and three assists to lead the Lions.
In the opening minutes of the second half, neither team led by more than four points, before the Cougars took the lead for good with 11:55 remaining in the game on a three-point play by freshman forward Akinwande Oshodi (Florence, N.J.) to take a 40-37 lead.
The Cougars used a 7-0 run to extend the lead to 44-37 following a lay-up by Williams with 10:34 remaining, and Kean would lead by as many as nine points (51-42) when Williams knocked down a three-pointers with just under six minutes remaining.
Down the stretch, TCNJ pulled to within four points at 58-54 with just 44 ticks remaining before the Cougars sealed the victory converting 10-of-14 free throws in the final minute of the game.
Oshodi hit 6-of-8 shots from the floor to finish with 18 points and six rebounds, while Wright added 12 points, four rebounds and two steals.
For the Lions, junior guard Jeff Molinelli (Pennington, N.J.) had 12 points, seven rebounds and three steals, while senior forward Mark Aziz (Hackettstown, N.J.) and senior guard Corey Gilmore (South Plainfield, N.J.) added 11 points and 10 points, respectively.
The Cougars have a bye weekend before hosting NJAC South Division leader Richard Stockton College in the final regular season home game on Wednesday, February 20. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m.

Union, N.J. (2/19/08) - Freshman guard Keith Williams (Jersey City, N.J.) has been selected as the Kean Athlete of the Week following his performance at The College of New Jersey on Wednesday, February 13th. Williams led all players with 22 points while also adding four steals in 34 minutes of action as the Cougars picked up their third straight conference win keeping them in the playoff hunt.
Williams currently leads Kean in points, three-pointers, free-throws and steals.

Union, N.J. (2/19/08) - Freshman forward Angelica Bermudez (Belleville, N.J.) has been named the Kean University Athlete of the Week following her performance at The College of New Jersey on Wednesday, February 13th. Bermudez tallied 13 points and five rebounds as she played a season-high 26 minutes off the bench in Kean's loss to TCNJ.
Bermudez is currently second on the team averaging 5.9 rebounds per game.

UNION, N.J. (2/20/08) - On senior night at Kean University, guards Lamar Wright (Galloway, N.J.) and Will Floyd (Eustis, Fla.) combined for 30 points and eight assists in their final regular season home game of their careers, however the Cougars fells to Richard Stockton College, 70-65, in New Jersey Athletic Conference men's basketball action on Wednesday evening. Despite the loss, Kean (9-15, 4-8 NJAC) earned the third and final seed in the South Division by virtue of a loss by The College of New Jersey earlier in the evening, giving the Cougars their first NJAC playoff berth since 2000-01.
Junior forward Jerome Hubbard (Neptune, N.J.) scored a game-high 21 points and made five steals to lead the Ospreys (18-6, 10-3 NJAC), who had already clinched the top seed in the South Division.
In the opening half, Richard Stockton led by as many as 11 points (25-14) midway through the half on a three-pointer by sophomore guard Santini Lancioni (Runnemede, N.J.) with 10:38 to go in the half.
The Cougars trimmed the deficit to three points (31-28) on a free throw by freshman guard Keith Williams (Jersey City, N.J.) with 5:37 to go, before the Ospreys extended the lead back out to nine point on a three-pointer by Hubbard at the buzzer to take a 41-32 lead at halftime.
Hubbard paced Richard Stockton with 14 points in the first half, while Wright (pictured left) tallied 12 points and four rebounds for the Cougars.
Richard Stockton scored the first five points of the second half on a three pointer by senior guard Mario Lancioni (Runnemede, N.J.) and lay-up by junior Chad Davis (Millville, N.J.) to build a 14-point lead at 46-32 just 80 seconds into the half. After the teams traded baskets on each of their next two possessions, the Cougars reeled off 12 unanswered points to pull within 51-49 on a lay-up by junior guard Yasien Beatty (Jersey City, N.J.) with just under 11 minutes remaining.
The Ospreys responded with five quick points to push the lead back out to six points (55-49), but Kean again pulled back within a single point on two separate occasions in the final 10 minutes of action, but could never score the go-ahead basket.
In the final minute, Kean pulled within two points at 67-65 following a pair of free throws from Floyd, and had the ball with a chance to tie the game with a three-pointer, however the Osprey defense forced a Cougar turnover and Mario Lancioni knocked down a pair of free throws with 10 seconds remaining to seal the victory.
Wright finished with a team-highs of 17 points, nine rebounds and five assists, while Floyd (pictured right) chipped in with 13 points, three assists and two steals in 21 minutes of action. Freshman forward Akinwande Oshodi (Florence, N.J.) added eight points and five steals for the Cougars.
For the Ospreys, Mario Lancioni had 16 points, including four three-pointers, and three steals, and freshman guard Kai Massaquoi (Lawnside, N.J.) added eight points and five rebound in the victory.
The Cougars travel to Rowan University for the regular season finale on Saturday, February 23. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.

Union, N.J. (2/9/08) - Junior Melissa Beyruti (Union City, N.J.) (pictured right) led all players with 20 points as sixth ranked (USA Today/ESPN Top 25 Coaches' Poll) Kean University defeated Rutgers-Newark, 81-49, Saturday afternoon at Harwood Arena. Freshman Tiffany Patrick (Piscataway, N.J.) (pictured right) collected 10 points and six rebounds for the Cougars who improve to 21-1 overall and 9-1 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference. Senior Eni Fageyinbo (Morris Plains, N.J.) led the Scarlet Raiders with 12 points and six rebounds as Rutgers-Newark falls to 17-5 and 6-4 in conference play.
The Cougars wore pink uniforms in support of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association "Think Pink" campaign, and with today's fan support, helped to increase this year's total money raised to $4,900, which will be donated to the American Cancer Society.
After the Scarlet Raiders tied things up at 11 all with just over 15 minutes remaining in the first half on a jumper from E. Fageyinbo, the Cougars used two quick runs to give a little cushion. The first run of eight straight points gave the Cougars a 19-11 advantage as Beyruti chipped in with four points in the span. The final run occurred in the final two minutes of action in the half as KU scored nine straight points for a 46-20 halftime lead.
Beyruti (pictured left) led all players with 17 first half points while junior Ebony Jackson (Newark, N.J.) had 10.
Kean then controlled the second half as all 13 players on the active roster saw action.
KU, who outrebounded Newark, 43-34, received a game-high eight assists to go along with a final 15 points from Jackson. Senior Chari' Cooper (Paulsboro, N.J.) finished the game with eight points and eight rebounds to increase her career total to 1,388 rebounds, currently fifth all-time in NCAA Division III history.
Rutgers-Newark senior Nerlande Nicolas (Maplewood, N.J.) had eight points and six rebounds as well as four assists.
The Cougars will head to the road to take on The College of New Jersey in a pivotal south-division matchup on Wednesday, February 13th at 6 p.m.

New Haven, Conn. (2/10/08) - The Kean University indoor track and field teams competed at the CTC Indoor Track and Field Championships this weekend at Yale University. Highlighting the weekend was the women's 4x200 Meter Relay team comprised of Demeka Pressley (Trenton, N.J.), Asha Winters (Ewing, N.J.), Tyher'Rah Thomas (South Plainfield, N.J.) and Jamie Grenger (Hazlet, N.J.) who finished third with a time of 1:50.22, qualifying for the ECAC Tournament.
In other action on the women's side, freshman Alyssa Crosby (Hackensack, N.J.) finished seventh in the women's 500 meter run with a time of 1:30.17 while junior Erin Jones (Upper Saddle River, N.J.) placed fourth in the women's pole vault with a measurement of 2.75 meters. In field action, sophomore Jan Bush (Willow Grove, Pa.) recorded a fourth place finish with a distance of 10.90 meters while teammate Sarah Lyon (Clymer, N.Y.) was eighth in the same event with a distance of 9.85 meters. In other relay action, the women's 4x400 relay team of Pressley, Grenger, Thomas and Winters placed fourth with a time of 4:22.24.
On the men's side, freshman Marques Wallace (Vauxhall, N.J.) finished fourth in the men's 55 meter dash finals with a time of 6.76 seconds while also placing fifth in the men's 4x200 meter relay with teammates Matt Gough (Jefferson, N.J.), Sean Oyelaja (Lagos, Nigeria) and Joe DiMeglio (Metuchen, N.J.) with a time of 1:33.80. In other relay action, the 4x400 relay team of Dwayne Dobbins (Mt. Holly, N.J.), Reggie James (Willingboro, N.J.), Jason Staggers (Jackson, N.J.) and Gough finished third with a time of 3:30.16. In field action, Staggers finished fourth in both the high jump and long jump with distances of 1.75 meters and 6.62 meters respectively.

UNION, N.J. (2/5/08) - The Kean University women's basketball poll moved up in the national rankings following a pair of victories in New Jersey Athletic Conference action last week. In both the USA Today ESPN Division III Top 25 Coaches Poll and D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll, the Cougars moved up one spot to sixth after a 2-0 week that saw the Cougars defeat Rowan University (89-64) and Ramapo College (91-36) in NJAC action.
In the most recent NCAA statistical rankings, the team and several Cougars players are ranked in numerous categories. As a team, Kean is ranked first in the nation in scoring offense (87.0) and rebound margin (15.8), while ranking second in scoring margin (31.9), fourth in steals (16.7), tied for fourth in winning percentage (.950), and 11th in assists (17.4).
The Cougars are also 15th in blocked shots per game (5.2), 18th in field goal percentage (.446), 29th in field goal percentage defense (.338), 52nd in scoring defense (55.1), 57th in assist-to-turnover ratio (0.86), 66th in three-point field goals made per game (5.8) and 71st in three-point field goal percentage (.334).
Individually, senior center Chari' Cooper (Paulsboro, N.J.) is ranked third in rebounds per game (15.0) and her 1,368 career rebounds are currently sixth all-time in NCAA Division III history and are just nine rebounds shy of moving into fifth place all-time.
The 2006-07 NCAA Division III leader in three point field goals made, junior guard Melissa Beyruti (Union City, N.J.) is currently eighth in the category this season (3.0), while also ranking 56th in three-point field goal percentage (.366) and 49th in scoring (17.7).
Junior guard Ebony Jackson (Newark, N.J.) is ranked in a pair of categories, currently seventh in assists per game and 24th in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.94).
The Cougars look for their 20th win of the season on Wednesday, February 6th, when they host Rutgers-Camden in NJAC action at 6 p.m.

UNION, N.J. (2/6/08) - Senior center Chari' Cooper (Paulsboro, N.J.) recorded her 15th double-double of the season and moved into fifth place in NCAA Division III career rebounding to help lead the sixth-ranked Kean University women's basketball team to a 88-44 victory over visiting Rutgers University-Camden in New Jersey Athletic Conference action on Wednesday evening. Cooper (pictured right) had 10 points and 12 rebounds, giving her 1,380 career boards to move into the top five on the NCAA all-time charts. Sophomore guard Cardiss Jackman (Tobyhanna, Pa.) led the Cougars with 17 points on 8-of-14 shooting from the floor.
The Cougars (20-1, 8-1 NJAC) placed five players in double-figures en-route to recording their 20th win of the season and 15th straight victory. Senior guard Imani Hafiz (Franklinville, N.J.) led the Scarlet Raptors (7-14, 1-8 NJAC) with a team-high 12 points and seven rebounds.
In the opening half, Kean used an 18-2 run to build a 24-8 lead with 12:15 left. The Cougars extended the lead to 25 points on a lay-up by sophomore guard Colby Greenlee (Stroudsburg, Pa.) to take 45-20 lead at halftime.
Jackman led all scorers with 13 points in the opening half, while Rutgers-Camden guards Amber Parker (Pennsauken, N.J.) and Jasmine White (Camden, N.J.) each tallied six points.
The Cougars continued to build on their lead in the second half, as the 44-point margin of victory was Kean's largest lead of the evening.
In the game, Kean scored 49 points off of the Scarlet Raptors' 42 turnovers and held a 62-16 edge in points in the paint.
Junior guard Melissa Beyruti (Union City, N.J.) scored 12 points and dished out a game-high six assists, while freshman forward Tiffany Patrick (Piscataway, N.J.) (pictured left) hit 6-of-10 shots from the floor en-route to 12 points, six rebounds and five steals.
Freshman guard Angelica Bermudez (Belleville, N.J.) scored 11 points in 14 minutes off the bench to round out the Cougars in double-figures.
For Rutgers-Camden, freshman Karima Blackwell (Somerdale, N.J.) had seven rebounds, while White finished with seven points, including a pair of three-pointers.
Kean returns to action on Saturday, February 9, when the Cougars host Rutgers-Newark in a key NJAC cross-over game at 1 p.m.. All fans are encouraged to wear pink to the game in support of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association "Think Pink" initiative. Union, N.J. (2/9/08)-Senior Lamar Wright (Galloway, N.J.) tallied 17 points for a total of exactly 1,000 career points at Kean University as the Cougars rallied in the second half to defeat Rutgers-Newark, 75-66 at Harwood Arena Saturday afternoon. Freshman Keith Williams (Jersey City, N.J.) (pictured right) had a game-high 23 points, including 13 in the second half as Kean now stands at 8-14 overall and 3-7 in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC). Junior Chadd Barnes (Newark, N.J.) led the Scarlet Raiders with 18 points as well as seven rebounds as Rutgers-Newark falls to 12-10 overall and 5-5 in conference action.
Trailing by 10 (56-46) with just under 10 minutes to go in the second half the Cougars rallied with an 8-0 run to pull within two as freshman Akinwande Oshodi (Florence, N.J.) recorded four points in the span. Kean responded and took the lead for good with 4:29 remaining as Wright hit a jumper to put the Cougars ahead 63-61. Williams sealed the win with a trey with 1:34 to go off an assist by junior Yasien Beatty (Jersey City, N.J.) to give KU a seven point advantage.
Kean visited the charity stripe 36 times in the game, the most of any game this season, and nailed five of six in the final forty seconds to secure the win.
The first half belonged to the Scarlet Raiders who held a 32-24 lead at the break. Rutgers-Newark led by as many as 10 in the first 20 minutes before a quick KU burst closed the gap to three on a three-pointer by Akinwande followed by a free-throw from Williams. Newark ended the half on a 6-2 run as Angel Collado (Jersey City, N.J.) hit a layup with time expiring for the eight point advantage.
Junior David Cherry (Linden, N.J.) finished the game with 16 points (all in the first half) while Collado had 13 points in the loss.
Oshodi recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds while Beatty (pictured left) was a perfect 5-of-5 from the floor for 10 points in the win.
Kean will travel to The College of New Jersey in NJAC action on Wednesday, February 13th at 8 p.m. in a key south-division matchup.

MAHWAH, N.J. (02/02/08) - Senior guard Lamar Wright (Galloway, N.J.) scored a game-high 24 points, however the Kean University men's basketball fell short at Ramapo College, 71-69, in New Jersey Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon. Rookie Keith Williams (Jersey City, N.J.) scored all 14 of his points in the second-half for the Cougars (6-14, 1-8 NJAC), while Ramapo (10-9, 4-4 NJAC) was led by Assad Shakkir (Newark, N.J.) and junior Tim Wesley (Jersey City, N.J.) with 15 points apiece.
The Cougars, who trailed by as many as 10 points in the second half, tied the game at 69-69 on a three-pointer by Wright (pictured right) with just six seconds remaining. A Cougar foul however led to a pair of free throws by Ramapo's Desmond Sanders (Newark, N.J.), and Wright's three-pointer at the buzzer fell short, as three of the Cougars' last six losses have been by three points or less.
After Ramapo opened the game scoring the first five points of the contest, the Cougars responded with a 9-0 run to take a 9-5 lead less than four minutes into the game. Kean led by as many as six points (18-12) on three free throws from sophomore Levar Tilly (Jersey City, N.J.), before five straight points from Ramapo pulled the score to within one point (18-17).
Ramapo regained the lead on a jumper by Wesley for a 31-30 lead with 3:26 left in the opening half before the Roadrunners closed the half with an 8-2 run to take a 39-32 lead at halftime.
Wright tallied 15 points for the Cougars in the opening half, as the Cougars knocked down nearly half of their shots (10-of-21). Shakkir paced the Roadrunners with 10 points.
In the second half, Ramapo used a 10-0 run midway through the half to extend the lead to 10 points (55-45) with 9:42 left in the game. Kean tied the game back up less than three minutes later and would force a tie on four more separate occasions, but the Cougars were never able to take the lead in the final minutes of the game.
For Kean, Wright added a team-high six rebounds, while freshman Akinwande Oshodi (Florence, N.J.) scored 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting.
Rookie Ahmad Hassan (Edgewater, N.J.) scored 13 points for Ramapo, and Jamall Jenkins (New Brunswick, N.J.) pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds.
Kean returns to action on Wednesday, February 6, when the Cougars host Rutgers-Camden in a key NJAC South Division match-up. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m.

MAHWAH, N.J. (02/02/08) - Freshman forward Tiffany Patrick (Piscataway, N.J.) scored a career-high 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Kean University women's basketball team to a 91-36 victory over host Ramapo College in New Jersey Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon. Patrick (pictured right) connected on 7-of-10 shots from the floor, while junior guard Ebony Jackson (Newark, N.J.) swiped a career-best 10 steals as the seventh-ranked Cougars (19-1, 7-1 NJAC) won their 14th straight game. Sophomore center Beth Weinmann (Pompton Plains, N.J.) led the Roadrunners (3-16, 0-8 NJAC) with eight points.
After Ramapo hit a free throw to record the first point of the game, Kean responded with 11 straight points to open a 20-2 run and eventually took a 48-20 lead at halftime. Patrick led all scorers in the opening half with 14 points, while junior guard Melissa Beyruti (Union City, N.J.) added 12 points.
Kean held the Roadrunners to just 23.8 percent shooting (5-of-21) in the opening half and scored 28 points off of Ramapo's 20 turnovers.
In the second half, the Cougars extended the lead to 43 points (71-28) after opening the half on a 23-8 run. Kean would lead by as many as 56 points (87-31) with 3:15 remaining, as the Cougars scored at least 90 points for the ninth time this season.
Beyruti added 17 points and five assists for the Cougars, while Jackson had a double-double with 10 points, 10 steals and five assists.

Those nine rebounds gave Cooper (pictured left) 1,368 career boards, moving her into sixth place in NCAA Division III history and just nine rebounds shy of moving into the top five all-time.
For the game, Kean held a 53-37 advantage on the glass, including a 28-13 edge on the offensive boards, while also forcing the Roadrunners into 41 turnovers. The Cougars, who scored 51 points off turnovers and took nearly twice as many shots, limited Ramapo to just 25.0 percent shooting (10-of-40) for the game.
Kean looks for its 20th win of the season on Wednesday, February 6, when the Cougars host Rutgers-Camden in NJAC action at 6 p.m.

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. (02/02/08) - The Kean University men's and women's indoor track and field teams competed at the Frank Colden Invitational at Ursinus College on Saturday afternoon. The women's team placed seventh overall with 30 points, while the men finished ninth with 26 points. Heading the women's top-10 finishers, junior Erin Jones (Upper Saddle River, N.J.) placed second in the pole vault with a leap of 2.75 meters. In the shot put, sophomore Jan Bush (Willow Grove, Pa.) finished fourth (33-8) and junior Sarah Lyon (Clymer, N.Y.) placed eighth (30-8.75)
Freshman Jamie Grenger (Hazlet, N.J.) and junior Demeka Pressley (Trenton, N.J.) each had a pair of top-10 finishes in the long jump and 200-meter dash. Grenger (pictured right) was fifth in the 200 (28.42) and seventh in the long jump (4.60 meters), while Pressley placed seventh in the 200-meter dash (28.54) and eighth in the long jump (4.53 meters). Freshman Asha Winters (Ewing, N.J.) added a 10th-place finish in the 200-meters (28.86).
In the relays, the women's 4x200 meter squad placed fourth in 1:54.67, while the 4x400 meter relay team was seventh in 4:45.75.
Freshman John Badala (Scotch Plains, N.J.) and junior Jason Staggers (Jackson, N.J.) had the highest individual finishes, each earning a second-place finish. Badala (pictured left) was second in the shot put (44-2.5), while Staggers placed second in the long jump (6.67 meters), also qualifying him for the ECAC Championships.
Junior Dwayne Dobbins (Mount Holly, N.J.) placed fourth in the 1000-meter run (2:43.22), while freshman Brian Vanderstad (Pompton Lakes, N.J.) finished seventh in the shot put (41-6).
Rookie Marques Wallace (Vauxhall, N.J.) had a pair of top-10 finishes, placing eighth in the 55-meter dash (6.79) and ninth in the 200-meter dash (23.80). Freshman Matt Gough rounded out the top-10 finishers for the Cougars with a 10-place showing in the 400-meter dash (54.90). The men's 800-meter relay squad also placed sixth in a time of 1:36.07.
The Cougars return to action on Saturday, February 9, when they travel to New Haven, Conn., for the CTC Championships hosted by Yale University.

Pitman, N.J. (2/4/08) - Freshman guard Keith Williams (Jersey City, N.J.) was selected as the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Rookie of the Week as announced by the conference office on Monday. Williams earns NJAC Rookie of the Week honors for the fourth time this season after averaging 16.0 points and 3.5 rebounds per game in pair of NJAC contests for the Cougars.
He opened the week by tallying 18 points, six rebounds, and three assists in a 71-63 NJAC loss to Rowan. He wrapped up the week by notching 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the floor in just 20 minutes of action during the Cougars' 71-69 NJAC road defeat at Ramapo.
Williams, who shot .500 (11-of-22) from the field in the two games combined, currently ranks tied for third in the NJAC in steals (2.21 per game).

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. (2/3/08) - Senior shortstop Johanna Hedler (South Plainfield, N.J.) was honored at New Jersey's National Girls and Women in Sports Day as the Kean University Woman of the Year at Seton Hall University on Sunday, February 3. Student-athletes from Garden State colleges, universities and high schools were honored at a luncheon prior to the Seton Hall-West Virginia women'a basketball game.
Hedler, a three-time New Jersey Athletic Conference softball all-star and Dean's List student, has also been named a National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-America Scholar Athlete, the Kean Female Scholar-Athlete and to the NJAC First-Team All-Academic Squad.
On the diamond, the three-year starter and two-time captain enters her senior season ranked twice in the top five of single season homeruns and is tied for second in career homeruns (11) and triples (8).
An early childhood education major, Hedler (pictured right with Head Softball Coach Margie Acker) has been a National Student-Athlete Day Honoree and is a member of the Kappa Delta Pi and Lambda Alpha Sigma Honor Societies.
In the community, Hedler has participated in the Play Doh Drive for Childrens Tomorrow Fund, the 20th Legislative District's Annual Turkey Basket Drive, the Tinton Falls Walk for Education, the Community Food Bank in Hillside, N.J., and Kean's Healthy Halloween.
National Girls and Women in Sport Day celebrates the athletic achievements of women and the positive well-being associated with sports participation, while also recognizing the continuing struggle for equality for women in sports. NGWSD, chartered by the United States Congress in 1986, is honored in all 50 states. This year's theme is, "All In!

Union, N.J. (1/17/08) - Senior outfielder Bryan Burke (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) has been selected as a D3baseball.com 2nd Team Preseason All-American as announced on Thursday. Burke, who transferred from Frostburg State University, is entering his senior season and first as a Cougar. As a junior, Burke started and played all 42 games for the Bobcats with a team-leading .426 batting average to go along with a team-high 27 stolen bases. Burke, who also tallied six triples, led Frostburg with 66 hits as well as 26 walks.
In 2007, Burke was selected a Rawlings Gold Glove winner along with former Cougars Perry Schatzow (Ocean Twp., N.J.) and Dan Zeffiro (Old Bridge, N.J.).

PRINCETON, N.J. (1/26/08) - The Kean University men's and women's indoor track and field teams competed at the Princeton Relays hosted by Princeton University on Saturday afternoon. Freshman Marques Wallace (Vauxhall, N.J.) led the Cougars with a pair of top five finished in the 60-meter and 200-meter dashes. Wallace posted a team-high fourth-place finish in the 200, crossing the finish line in 23.47 seconds. In the 60-meter dash, Wallce finished in 7.29 seconds to place fifth, while junior Seun Oyelaja (Lagos, Nigeria) placed seventh in 7.41 seconds.
Other top 10 men's finishers included junior Reggie James (Willingboro, N.J.) and freshman Matt Gough (Jefferson, N.J.) placing eighth (53.84) and ninth (54.06), respectively, in the 400-meter dash. Freshman Brian Vanderstad (Pompton Lakes, N.J.) placed ninth in the shot put with a distance of 14.41 meters (47-03.50), while the men's 1600-meter relay team of James, Oyelaja, freshman Chris Pegeron (Plainfield, N.J.) and junior Chris Kosinski (Jersey City, N.J.) placed ninth in a time of 3:49.54.
On the women's side, the 1600-meter relay team of freshman Asha Winters (Ewing, N.J.), freshman Alyssa Crosby (Hackensack, N.J.), junior Erin Jones (Upper Saddle River, N.J.) and sophomore Tyher'Rah Thomas (South Plainfield, N.J.) finished sixth in a time of 4:52.23.
Thomas added a 10th-place finish in the 1000-meter run (3:36.16), while Jones finished seventh in the 500-meter dash (1:44.12).
The Cougars return to action on Saturday, February 2, when they participate in the Frank Colden Invitational at Ursinus College.

MONTCLAIR, N.J. (01/26/08) - The Kean University men's basketball team placed four players in double-figures, however host Montclair State University defeated the Cougars, 75-61, in New Jersey Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon. For Kean (6-12, 1-5 NJAC), rookie Jonathan Jones (Linden, N.J.) was one of four players with 10 points, hitting 5-of-7 shots from the floor while also adding five rebounds and three assists. The Red Hawks (10-8, 3-3 NJAC) were led by junior forward Carlos Pena (Clifton, N.J.), who finished with 14 points, eight rebounds and three assists.
MSU built a 45-30 advantage at halftime, as freshman guard James Williams (Englewood, N.J.) had 11 points, three assists and two steals to lead the way. For Kean, freshman Akinwande Oshodi (Florence, N.J.) scored all 10 of his points in the opening half, hitting 3-of-5 shots from the floor and 3-of-4 from the charity stripe.
In the second half, the Red Hawks extended the lead to 26 points (58-32) on a three-pointer by Williams with 12:32 remaining before the Cougars put together a 27-13 run over the next 10 minutes to cut the deficit 12 points at 71-59. However, Kean could not get any closer the rest of the way as MSU hit 4-of-6 foul shots down the stretch to seal the victory.
For Kean, senior guard Lamar Wright (Galloway, N.J.) and Oshodi each finished with 10 points and five rebounds, while sophomore guard Levar Tilly (Jersey City, N.J.) had 10 points and four assists off the bench.
Williams also had 14 points and a game-high six assists for Montclair State, while sophomore guard Ken Dudley (Willingboro, N.J.) had 13 points on the strength of 9-of-12 shooting from the foul line. Freshman center Jon Georges (West Orange, N.J.) came off the bench to score 10 points in just 18 minutes of action.
Kean returns home after three straight road games to face Rowan University in NJAC action on Wednesday, January 30. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m.

Pitman, N.J. (1/28/08) - Freshman Tiffany Patrick (Piscataway, N.J.) was named the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Rookie of the Week following a 2-0 week for the Cougars in conference action. Patrick earns NJAC Rookie of the Week honors for the fourth time this season after averaging 8.5 points and 9.0 rebounds during the week of January 21st.
She first tallied six points and 12 rebounds in Kean's 107-48 NJAC road win at Richard Stockton. She wrapped up the week by posting 11 points and six rebounds in the Cougars' 12th consecutive win, a 76-63 conference road victory at Montclair State. Patrick, who shot .778 from the field in the two wins combined, currently ranks second in the NJAC in field goal percentage (.583).

UNION, N.J. (01/22/08) - The Kean University women's basketball team has moved into the Top 10 in a pair of national rankings after victories over The College of New Jersey and nationally ranked Messiah College last week. Kean moved up four spots to #7 in the D3hoops.com Top 25 poll and three spots to #8 in the USA Today ESPN Division III Top 25 Coaches Poll.
Last week, the Cougars defeated The College of New Jersey, 60-44, in a key New Jersey Athletic Conference South Division showdown, as the Cougars scored the final 15 points of the game to pull away for the victory.
In a rematch of last year's NCAA Second Round, the Cougars once again defeated Messiah College on its home court, defeating the then #7/8 Falcons, 69-64.
The Cougars return to NJAC action this week, traveling to Richard Stockton College (1/23/08) and Montclair State University (1/26/08).

MONTCLAIR, N.J. (01/26/08) - The No.7/8 Kean University women's basketball team placed all five starters in double-figures en-route to a 76-63 victory over host Montclair State University in New Jersey Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore guard Cardiss Jackman (Tobyhanna, Pa.) led all scorers with 18 points and senior center Chari' Cooper (Paulsboro, N.J.) recorded her 50th career double-double and moved into 10th place in NCAA Division III career rebounds, as the Cougars (17-1, 5-1 NJAC) won their 12th straight game.
For the Red Hawks (10-7. 3-3 NJAC), sophomore forward Catherine Christino (Farmingdale, N.J.) scored a team-high 15 points.
In the opening half, the Cougars built a 12-point lead on two separate occasions, the second time on a lay-up by sophomore Danielle Brown (North Brunswick, N.J.) with 25 seconds left to take a 38-26 lead into halftime. In a sloppy half that had a combined 35 turnovers, the Cougars knocked down exactly half of their shots (14-of-28) and all eight of their free throws, while limiting MSU to just 35.7 percent shooting (10-of-28).
Jackman led the Cougars with 11 first-half points, while junior guard Melissa Beyruti (Union City, N.J.) added seven points in just nine minutes of action. For the Red Hawks, Christino and junior guard Amy Bonk (Edison, N.J.) each had eight points in the opening half.
The Cougars extended the lead to 19 points (50-31) after opening the second half on a 12-5 run less than four minutes into the half. The Red Hawks responded with 11 unanswered points to cut the deficit to single digits (50-42) on a lay-up by sophomore guard Kisandra Ayanbeku (Burlington, Mass.) with 12:59 remaining.
Kean pushed the lead back out to 18 points on a lay-up by Jackman with just under seven minutes left and Montclair would pull no closer than 12 points the rest of the way.
Cooper recorded her 18th career game with at least 20 rebounds, while also notching her 13th double-double of the season. Her 1,343 career rebounds moved her into the top 10 in NCAA Division III career rebounds and are just 34 rebounds shy of moving into the top five all-time.
Junior guard Ebony Jackson (Newark, N.J.) finished with 13 points and five assists, while freshman forward Tiffany Patrick (Piscataway, N.J.) added 11 points and six rebounds. Beyruti chipped in with 11 points to round out the Cougar starters.
For Montclair State, senior guard Jessica Garrabrant (Denville, N.J.) finished with 13 points and a team-high seven rebounds, while Ayanbeku added nine points.
Kean returns to NJAC action on Wednesday, January 30, when the Cougars host Rowan University in a South Division match-up at 6 p.m.
