Mattonelli, Clark Spark Cougar Offense In Doubleheader Sweep

UNION, N.J. (4/10/07) - Junior Dan Mattonelli (Hamilton, N.J.) recorded seven RBI while junior Ryan Clark (Livingston, N.J.) belted a three run blast as Kean University, ranked #5 in the latest ABCA/Collegiate Baseball poll, swept St. Joseph's College-Long Island, 15-7 and 8-2, Tuesday afternoon at Jim Hynes Stadium. In game one, the offense exploded, scoring runs in every inning. The Cougars (19-4) led by as many as ten, 11-1, heading into the fifth inning. The Golden Eagles (7-17) made things interesting by recording six runs in the top of the inning, including a grand slam by Tyler Ruthizer (Bethpage, N.Y.) to put the score at 11-7, but Kean battled through and tacked on four runs in the bottom of the same inning to secure the game one win.

Offensively, junior infielder Maikel De La Rosa (Newark, N.J.) was 3-for-3 with three runs scored while Mattonelli was 1-for-3 with three RBI.

On the mound sophomore Joe Rizzo (Staten Island, N.Y.) earned his second win of the season. Rizzo (2-0) allowed one run and two hits in five innings of work.

In game two, St. Joseph's College got on the board first as Eduin Delgado (East Setauket, N.Y.) crossed the plate after reaching on a double down the leftfield line. Kean responded and scored four runs in the bottom of the inning. Clark delivered the blow, a three run shot over the leftfield wall.

After exchanging single runs, the Cougars tacked on three runs in the bottom of the sixth. But the game would end there, as time ran out due to darkness.

Junior Tom Paglione (Hamilton, N.J.) earned his second win of the season with a complete game effort. Paglione (2-0) allowed two runs, zero earned, and five hits while also fanning seven and walking two.

Mattonelli recorded four RBI in game two on a 3-for-4 performance with two doubles while catcher Kevin O'Neill (Union, N.J.) was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
