Bringing Together Students in A Social and Academic Atmosphere

The recreation majors club aids students in their development within the recreation profession

Providing a means of getting involved with different causes and interact with different people, the recreation majors club was founded in the fall of 2011. This non-funded group was created for students who have an interest in community, commercial, and therapeutic recreation. The primary goal of the group is to foster a social and academic environment to aid students in their personal and professional development within the recreation profession.

The recreation majors club is aimed at developing and encouraging student and public interest in recreation, parks, and leisure education. It provides opportunities to become involved with the National Recreation and Park Association Inc., state recreation and park societies and annual district conferences. However, the club participates in events such as relay for life, bake sales and activities concerning organizations such as the Young Men Christian Association (YMCA), therefore encouraging participation of non-creation majors.

The club emphasizes volunteerism and participated in numerous activities in the fall of 2011, including the Autism Speaks walk, the Walk to End Alzheimer's, and Straight Up for Recreation -- a concert that benefitted

President of the recreation majors club and junior recreation therapy major, Shannon O'Brien, wanted to emphasize that the club is available to all majors to help with organizing and participating in various community service activities. She also pointed out that the club serves as a resource for information regarding recreation. "We are fortunate to have these three types of recreation programs," she stated. 'Kean has therapeutic recreation -- a program that not all schools have. And with a background in recreation therapy, students have the option of pursuing a master's degree in public administration.
