The color red can symbolize many things but what makes the color stand out is that it is uniquely attractive. As students walked by the University Center [UC] on Friday February 6, 2015, many were attracted to the color, as it drew the campus community to learn about heart disease in women. As a nationally recognized day, Wear Red Day is aimed to support the research and fundraising in women’s health.
The one thing that several college students have in common is being happy when one receives a high grade in all classes by the end of a semester.
Every year, Americans celebrate unofficial holidays following Thanksgiving; these days are Black Friday and Cyber Monday. As always, every event has a history, and overtime, that history holds the chance to be forgotten.
It was indeed a thrilling time for the brothers of Nu Delta Pi on the night of November 14, 2014 as they kicked off their 50th anniversary at Ursino Restaurant in Union, New Jersey. Several smiles, donned faces, laughs consuming the room, and heart-warming hugs were all seen at this cherishing and prominent event. From new brothers to older ones, all were given the opportunity to meet with each other and chat about their college careers and current lives.
The Association for Computing Machinery student chapter [ACM] at Kean University is one of Kean University’s many funded clubs. The ACM is a U.S. based international learning society for computing; it was founded in 1947 and is the world’s largest scientific and educational computing society. The association is nonprofit, it holds more than 100,000 members as of 2011, and is headquartered in New York City. The student chapter of the ACM here at Kean allows students to take advantage of the organization and resources that it can provide.
What does the winter bring along with its cold weather? Coughs, sneezes, and the infamous runny nose. One thing that’s worse than being sick is being under the weather while studying for and taking finals in an effort to put the semester to bed. Stocked up on tissues and chicken noodle soup? Surrounded by friends and family? Watching the football game? People stuffing the turkey then stuffing their mouths? Check, check, and check. But wait…something is missing: The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade [MTDP]. If five people were asked what Thanksgiving means to them, in return there would be five diverse answers because each person incorporates their own traditions into the celebration of the holiday. Thanksgiving is a forever changing holiday, but in 1924 came one addition—in the form of a parade—to the celebration, and this caused the fourth Thursday of November to never be the same.
Graduating college with a degree in hand, prepared to make a mark on the world, but cannot land a job. This is the experience of a decent portion of college graduates as it is no secret that the job market is tough to break into. To beef up resumes and increase the likelihood of getting their foot in the door, students are advised to take on internships. Internships are positions fulfilled by those interested in learning about a trade in a professional setting. Interns are not considered full-time employees at their place of business, but more so rather as apprentices who are often times unpaid.
As the fall season is kicking in, most students are wondering what they should dress up as for Halloween. Halloween is celebrated by millions of people around the word as an enjoyable time for kids to wear costumes, go to their neighbors to get free candy, watch scary movies, and listen to ghost stories. It is certainly a cheerful time for people to get together and share a common experience filled with fun, laughs, and excitement. Nevertheless, for college students, the Halloween experience can perhaps be different.
Domestic. Violence. Two simple words when separate, but when placed in the same context they can instill a hodgepodge of emotions, thoughts, and reactions. Domestic violence is when one intimate partner carries out deliberate actions of abusive behavior, such as physical or sexual assault, battery, emotional abuse, threats, and/or intimidation, against the other partner. In domestic violence situations, one significant other revels in inflicting power and control as weapons against the other person in the relationship. Silvia Hernandez, executive director of El Centro Hispanoamericano in Plainfield, commented, “in your neighborhood, in my neighborhood, it’s [domestic violence] happening.”
Across the globe, more than two million people carry a gene that could potentially be handed down to their children. That gene is sickle cell.
