On Thursday, February 12, 2015, the School of General Studies [SGS] hosted an event for all current freshmen. The event had a large turnout as many students walked in a blocked off room of the Cougar’s Den, wondering what this event will consist of. This Valentine’s Day themed event was a great way to help freshmen relax and enjoy their college experience, as many can say that college isn’t a stress-free environment.

There are a lot of perks of becoming a college student. Students can decide how many classes one would like to take per semester, what major to study in, and, of course—especially those who live on campus—freedom from the rules that a parental figure sets in the house. Well, along with the many perks a person may receive by becoming a college student, comes several downsides and one of them includes gaining weight.

To celebrate Black History Month and the loveable day of Valentine’s Day, Student Government Organization hosted For the Love of Music: Black History Month and Valentine’s Day concert on Friday, February 6, 2015, at Wilkins Theatre. It was a successful night, especially since nearly 800 tickets were sold before the concert date. On the night of, the crowd did not only consist of college students, but of people of different ages ranging from age 17 to about the age of 60.

There are many great ways for students to get involved in the community and volunteering at The Community Food Banks of New Jersey [CFBNJ] is just one of the various services Kean University students can do. On Saturday, January 31, 2015, about 20 students hopped on a bus and traveled just minutes away to the CFBNJ located in Hillside, New Jersey. As students produced on the bus with excitement, there was no doubt that all students would give 100 percent of their time helping those in need.

Many students can agree that during the first semester of college, maintaining a healthy lifestyle is hard. There are plenty of unhealthy choices that students can choose from whether it be a cake pop from Starbucks, a slice of pizza from the University Center [UC] cafeteria or a bag of Doritos from the UC store. To kick off the Spring Semester, Liberty Hall Museum is hosting a Frozen themed ball on Saturday, January 24, Sunday, January 25, Saturday, January 31 and February 7 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. The ball is recommended for children ages 3 to 10, but any interested family members outlying that age range are more than welcome to bring them to this cold and wintery ball. Tell the little ones to wear their favorite Frozen character costume to show off their Frozen pride to a very special guest that will appear at the ball.

There are an abundance of ways to get involved on campus. Students can volunteer at different events, get an on-campus job, join an athletic team, or even join one of the many clubs and organization that Kean University has to offer. Some students may have trouble finding out where and when to join a group, or even what groups one can join, but there is no need to worry because on Monday, February 2, 2015 from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. the center for leadership and service [CLS] is hosting the Student Group Expo, which will be held in the University Center [UC] Atrium.

Many students will strive to receive high grades every semester, knowing that a high Grade Point Average [GPA] will land them a spot in graduate school or a high paying job. Countless students also know that being a part of one or more organizations on campus can also help bring attention to oneself when trying to land a high paying job. Several students, which include Hailey Cruz, will realize that experience in one or more fields can overweigh a high GPA when looking for a job, and for Cruz, experience is something she has.

The one person that countless students may never forget is Nigel Donald. Many students know Donald as the Vice President of the Student Organization, or as a person who likes to speak the mind of the others that cannot be heard. But too numerous others, especially those that he is closest to, they know him as more than his position in Student Organization. Those people know Donald as someone who is more than just a caring person, someone who wants to make a difference in another’s life.

On Tuesday, November 11, the Military and Veterans Club [MVC] helped celebrate Veterans Week, which is from November 9 through November 11, by hosting a Veterans Day Ceremony. It was a great way to honor the veterans who have served our country, especially those who gave their lives in the line of duty.Not only should we honor our veterans on Veterans day, but we should also express gratitude to the veterans we see on a daily basis. At Kean University, there are about 200 veterans and military reserves, and about 28 of them are a part of the MVC. The club is a great way for Kean University to recognize those who have served in the United States [U.S.] military.

Some people are willing to change the world one step at a time, whether it’s through community service, or donating to a charitable organization. On campus, there are many students who are willing to invest time in their local communities, whether it is volunteering at the community food bank or taking part in the clean-up of a park. But some people enjoy helping out others in a different way, and Kylie Becker is one of them.
