As the summer approaches, there are a number of possible plans for the three and half month period that students are away from classrooms. Vacationing in an exotic location, relaxing with friends, and settling into a routine of frivolousness are perhaps the most common options. Below are some suggestions for a more fruitful summer.

There is good news for current and prospective graduate students at the Kean University Nathan Weiss Graduate College. There is now a comprehensive plan for students who enroll in 12 or more credits during both summer sessions. The new plan offers considerable savings for students in addition to helping them complete their degrees at a faster pace.

Enlightening the Kean community about the cultures of the West Indies and larger Caribbean, and bringing together members who share an interest in the West Indian culture were the goals when the West Indies Culture Club. The club was founded in the spring of 2011. Members pride themselves on community service and promoting unity. These members represent many of the islands of the Caribbean, supporting the status if Kean as one of the most diverse universities in the country. The West Indian Culture Club offers a different outlook on the cultures of the Caribbean, rather than what is typically seen in the media. Expelling stereotypes was a factor that was taken into account when this club was started.

Kean University -- having been named to the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for the third consecutive year - will celebrate National Volunteer Week on Monday, April 16, 2012. The President's Honor Roll acknowledges outstanding community service and is the highest federal recognition that any college or university may receive. During this week, the center for leadership and service will offer students several volunteer activities. Additionally, the office will host a celebration of service banquet on Thursday, April 19, 2012.

In an effort to raise awareness about the services that the Nancy Thompson Library offers to Kean students, the library is sponsoring a video contest. Students will have the opportunity to make a video no longer than three minutes, expressing what they love about the library and how the services and resources have been helpful to them. The winner will receive a $300 gift card for use at the campus bookstore.

Providing a means of getting involved with different causes and interact with different people, the recreation majors club was founded in the fall of 2011. This non-funded group was created for students who have an interest in community, commercial, and therapeutic recreation. The primary goal of the group is to foster a social and academic environment to aid students in their personal and professional development within the recreation profession.

The time when students look to close one chapter of their lives and embark on another -- be it graduate school or the job market -- is upon us. By this time, students graduating in 2012 are feeling one or a combination of emotions -- joy at the knowledge of their impending graduation, sadness for the same reason, nervousness about their future responsibilities after college, and/or uncertainty about employment opportunities. Regardless of what awaits these students after graduation, there are certain things that need to be done in preparation for the hallmark of these students' collegiate careers.

Students majoring in English, film, fine arts, psychology, or any other major have at least one thing in common as it relates to classes -- they have to do class presentations at some point in their college career. Not everyone is a "social butterfly" and so not everyone will be comfortable standing in front of a filled room and speaking. However, there are steps that can be taken to ensure that the presentation is delivered effectively.
