Starting with the kickoff setting everything into motion and an appearance by the distinguished Martin Luther King III, Kean has a lot to offer this month.

The Center for Leadership and Service (CLS) will be hosting Alternative Spring Break, a service trip for student volunteers. It will transpire from March 8 to March 13, 2020, and gives students an opportunity to be productive and show their volunteerism over their time off from school.

It is the dawn of a new year. On Thursday, Jan. 23, Student Organization and the Asian Studies Program hosted the Lunar New Year Celebration that officially kicked off the Year of the Rat. For attendees there was food, prizes and performances. All attendees enjoyed the event while also learning new and fascinating discoveries about Asian culture.

On Thursday, Jan. 23 at 3:30 p.m., 11 freshman students were celebrated for their success in earning a 4.0 grade point average in their first semester at Kean University. The celebration took place in the lobby of the Center for Academic Success (CAS). The event was small, with only 6 of the 11 students being able to attend, but the General Education faculty and staff stood by to watch them receive their awards.

On Saturday, Feb. 22, singer-songwriter, Mandy Harvey, will perform at Kean University's Enlow Recital Hall. The show will begin at 7:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online, by phone, or at the box office.

Winter break is over and the Spring 2020 semester has officially begun. Even though it is not Spring just yet, students had a chance to relax and mingle with one another on Tuesday, Jan. 22, during Student Organization's Cougar Kick-off: Loco for Cocoa. There was hot cocoa, sweets and even a special appearance from the Kean Cougar itself.

On Saturday, Feb. 15, acclaimed multi-genre violinist and composer Regina Carter will perform at Kean University's Enlow Recital Hall. The event is being organized by Kean Stage, and begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are priced from $45 to $60.

Senior portraits are a commemoration of the hard work and dedication it takes to complete one's college career. During the months of February, March and April, the seniors of Kean University will have their chance to memorialize their own hard work by getting their portraits taken with Prestige Portraits by Lifetouch. Photo sessions will take place in the Miron Student Center (MSC), Room 226 from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Wilkins Theatre is presenting a showing of Alice in Wonderland, where one can follow Alice on a whimsical journey through another universe. This production of Alice in Wonderland has been on tour since Dec. 8, 2019, and will make a stop in Union, New Jersey on Feb. 8 at 11 a.m.

The Spring 2020 session of New Student Orientation (NSO) was held Jan. 9. Incoming freshman came to campus to learn all about what Kean has to offer. Through NSO, students acquire a plethora of Kean knowledge, including information on academics, involvement and the resources available to them, all while getting comfortable on campus and meeting their peers. The program is a great step to get students excited and ready to start their Kean collegiate career.

Leadership is more than just a title or a position in an organization. It is about actions and how people influence others to become the best version of themselves. The Leadership Institute offers a platform through the Center for Leadership and Service where students can practice their leadership skills and work well with their fellow peers. The Leadership Institute offers a program called L.E.A.D. (Leadership Education and Development) where students can earn all the benefits of the Leadership Institute in just seven weeks.

With the start of the new year comes the beginning of a brand new semester at Kean. The Spring 2020 semester is an opportunity for students at Kean to start fresh and begin to set new goals, achieve new heights or maintain the great progression they have already been on during their college careers. As with any semester, there are some dates that all students should be aware of before heading into it.
