Todo Unidos: Hispanic community represents at Kean

(10/06/23 6:20pm)

Hispanic Heritage Month is annually celebrated from September 15th to October 15th in the United States. It is a time when the Hispanic community is celebrated and recognized for its history, culture, journeys, and achievements. Hispanic Heritage started in the United States in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week. In 1988 it was then expanded to be a 30-day observation as it was enacted into law on August 17th, 1988. The reason for Hispanic Heritage Month beginning on September 15th is because that day is the anniversary of Latin American countries gaining their independence such as El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Honduras, and Costa Rica.

Comida Deliciosa!

(10/03/23 9:01pm)

Hispanic Heritage Month highlights the traditions and history of the Hispanic culture and people. One popular topic of Hispanic Heritage Month is the delicious food. According to Study.com, there are many ingredients important in the dishes such as avocados, beans, limes, onions, rice, tortillas, and garlic. Besides the flavorful ingredients, family is another important aspect of the Hispanic culture. Recipes are handed down from each generation including dishes that were cooked over an open fire, steamed, or fried. Family members learn how to make dishes from scratch and keep the beautiful traditions of their culture. According to WebstaurantStore,  some popular and cultural Hispanic foods include Tortilla Espanola, Empanadas, Tajadas, Ceviche, Churros, Tacos, Flan and, Tres Leches Cake. These foods are connected to Hispanic countries such as Argentina, Nicaragua, Venezuela, Mexico, and Ecuador. Although these dishes are common among Hispanic cultures, each culture puts its own spin on each dish. For instance, flan is a custard that is common in the Hispanic culture. However, Mexican flan is covered in caramel syrup while Spanish flan has a layer of scorched sugar on the bottom.
